Original piece was roughly 66 grams air and 44 in water. Gave me about 12 grams gold. Some did not stay with the piece during the process. Jewelery store in Placerville did the acid bath. I won't go near the stuff. NASTY.

This is a picture of the rock before the bath. I did a continuity test (Ranger Randy) checking to see if the vein was continuous, as most of it was, we proceeded. Other consideration for broken seams would be needed on future specimens.

I would also have the process controlled more so that some quartz is left intact.

Hydrofluoric acid  Bath I supose?

You could have just as well ended up with a bunch of little peaces of gold instead of the Tree!   LOL!

With great risks comes great reward  Smiley   Of course, with the continuity test he had a pretty good idea that at least a bit of it would be in decent size pieces....and the worst he could do would have been get spot, right?

That's it when working a piece to specimen.

You have to investigate the gold vein to see if it is connected. If not, hopefully he who has the hydrofloric acid will work with the piece instead of just tossing enough acid over the rocks to cover them and hope for the best.

I think the 5x Spot would come from those pieces that show the care taken to preserve the original quartz formation as well as expose the beauty of the gold.

Another piece we did.

I set the base in epoxy as soon as possible as the quartz crumbles and the gold is fragile. Don't know how to go about getting a weight on the piece now.  Huh?

Here is how you do the Spec Gravity Numbers.

Look down at the bottom of the link.

You can still do it again if you knew what the epoxy weight was.

Suspended the sample via 4 lbs test monofiliment from a chopstick that placed on a digital scale. Not very good one.

I zeroed out the scale with the chopstick on it first, then lifted the sample to get an "air" weight. Next, I just dunked it right into a cup of water and got my second weight. Used this formula:

Nugget weighed in air                           66.0   grams
Nugget suspended in water weighs   44.0   grams
   22.0   sum of B2 minus B3
specific gravity of the specimen   3.0   sum of B2 divided by B4
average specific gravity of quartz (2.63)   0.4   sum of B5 minus sg of quartz
   8.14   sum of B4 times B6
   0.31   Ounces
   12   Grams of contained gold
Specific Gravity Test (SG)
Dry Weight   D
Wet Weight   W

That's a fair chunk of gold no matter how you look at it.   Shocked
