This is my favorite tool for coin shooting. Most of the coins I find are within 3 " of the surface so I don't need a big shovel for that. I can pull most coins out of the ground with one small scoop. I made it long so I don't have to bend over so far to dig. That is nice in parks and where you don't want to spend a lot of time filling holes. It also comes in handy around big trees like this one I was working around today. I had a good coin hit right up next to the trunk between the big roots. I scooped out a hole at an angle under the roots and pulled out a 1965 quarter which was directly under a root that was about 2" in diameter. It would have taken a saw to get at that coin otherwise.

To make one you need a 12" length of 1-1/4 " electric conduit or other thin wall pipe. This one came off of a coffee table but any thin wall pipe 1-1/4 to 1-1/2 inches in diameter will do. A bicycle frame pipe would be perfect because that is tough steel.  Cut it at an angle with a hacksaw and cut some notches in the end to make a saw edge for cutting grass roots. Wrap the end with foam rubber to make a soft ball and tie a string around it and then tape the ball up with friction tape. Good Luck. I hope it works for you. gambol Detecting

That looks like a winner and much cheaper than a professional digging tool.

It's all about that moment when metal that hasn't seen the light of day for generations frees itself from the soil and presents itself to me.
