GW Hunter, no offense, but if that's what you find with a Garrett Pro Pointer, I am NOT getting one for my wife (we're too dang old to have one of those in the house on a full time basis)... Grin

For those on a really tight budget Harbor Freight sells a metal detector that works like a pointer for about $15. Range is probably less than an inch but it's great for poking dirt piles, in grass divots, and the side of holes. Plus at the price I won't mind so much if I lose it.

Since someone already created a thread about this, I thought I'd just throw in my message here as well. I just bought one from Amazon online, and it arrived yesterday! My wife smiled at me briefly when she saw/found out that it had the vibrator part to it (hehe), but seriously I got it out, and the batteries were already installed on it.. worked great the first time.
I can hardly wait to go out and try it out now.
Cheesy

i love mine. it is worth the money. mine has range of 4-5 inches.also has built in light for digging in the dark.
it is also pretty rugged and battery life is good. used it all week-end and still going strong.

I also love the Garrett Propointer. The only other one I have used is an Automax and it really sucked. The propointer seems very tough and is really fun to use. My wife is my digger for now until I get her a metal detector of her own but I find myself getiing in the dirt with her now and taking the propointer away so I can use it. At this rate she will be the detectorist and I will be the digger. One thing about her digging is it has taught me very well how to disctiminate properly and what to dig and not to dig. There is nothing worse than having your wife yell at you after diggin 10 inches for a rat tail pulltab.

I love mine, it's a great pin pointer.  I wish I could turn off the sound though.
