I'm new to metal detecting, and I was looking at purchasing the Garrett 150. I really want to stay under $200.00 since this is my first. I know absolutely nothing about metal detecting, that's what makes it so interesting to me. Would the Garrett 150 be the right unit to start out with?

I've had my 150 for 2 months now and I've found enough coins to buy a new set of batteries!!!. One thing though. The 150 doesn't pinpoint for you. What will happen you will give up on some small targets like dimes and pennys because they are the same color as the soil unless you carry a sieve around for the first month like I did. As you work with it you get better at pinpointing. I would suggest either buying a probe straight out or buying the 250 which has built in pinpointing. or even better. Both. Go to

. These guys did a depth sensitivity test for the garratt 250 and some more expensive machines.. I did a depth comparison of my 150 and it is slightly worse than the 250. Which is not to say the 150 is a bad machine. It just doesn't go deep and doesn't discriminate too well. I won't upgrade until I've mastered it and it looks like that is going to take a while.
