Howdy, folks.
I'm going to add a couple of extra days to the Labor Day weekend and take off for a 5 day hunt. I'll leave about 11pm tomorrow so I can meet up with the rest of my group about 6:30am on Friday--just in time to get a good round of morning hunting in.
We'll be hunting in an area that I've been visiting off and on since about 1966 or 1967 although most of my previous visits have been either rockhounding or surface hunting. (and all of them have been much shorter--only 2 to 4 hours each).
The area we'll be hunting was near a major zinc and lead producer (always manage to bring home some specimens of both galena and pyrite crystals). Not only are there a whole lot of "hot" rocks in the area, but there's a whole lot of surface trash (cans, old bed springs, pieces of corrugated metal etc).
The plan is to spend most of our time hunting the dumps. And to that end, I've built a new 40 inch by 18 inch screen that I'm just dying to break end. BUT I'm also planning on using the screen to help me hunt some of the areas that have so much trash that even the most dedicated detector swinger using a small coil is likely to avoid (or at least not spend as much time in as they should). I'm going to rake up 4 foot by 6 foot areas and run that surface trash through my screen and then detect the area I've cleaned. Depending upon how much subsurface trash there is (and I don't expect much because of the type of soil), I'll either use my standard coil or one of the small coils.
Hopefully I'll have at least a few items worth showing you guys next week when I get back.
