I'm dealing with a type of grass that seems to grow on top of the soil , like a rug . Not your typical blade variety , it seems as if it's on vines on some areas . Which is the best way to retrieve coins from this type of grass ?

actually it is pretty common for grass to grow like that, which is why sod rolls are so common in many parts of the country.   The retreival methods for this type of grass are the same as for grass without such obvious rhizomes and stolons (the viney parts).  If the soil is moist enough, the screwdriver method (use the search functionality for details on this method) will pop the coin right out.   Otherwise, cut a plug, check the plug (carpet) for the target, and if it's not there dig the soil under the plug.   When done, carefully replace you plug.   If the coin is in the plug, you should be able to manipulate it out between the "vines" with your fingers.

I have seen good results with folks digging with a bayonet that has been sharpened.  Or a good sharp knife to make the initial cut should help.  Also be sure your digging tool is as sharp as you can get it.  I carry a small file with me to keep things sharpened up in that kind of grass.  I don't know what that stuff is called but my daughter has it in her yard and it is a bitch!  Onus

Use what BitburgAggie_7377 said. When you cut your "plug" try to make it a "flap" and fold it back so when your done it has a better chance to come back quicker.
