My question is, is it better to own a machine with auto ground balance or manual.  Maybe someone who owns both or has had both can comment.
I knew the day I pulled out the old Micronta 4003 that I was buying a new detector, for no other reason maybe than to just own a new one.  I have a $500.00 limit and I have been looking at the Garrett Ace 350 and the Garrett Scorpion.  The scorpion has manual ground balance and the 350 is pre-set. I want to coin shoot AND nugget hunt.  The Kellyco guy I spoke with actually steered me towards the cheaper ace 350.  I am not opposed to other brands in that price range either, so if you want to throw another two cents worth in about brands, I'd appreciate it.

If you wish to find nuggets,  Manual GB is a must. Pre Set is NOT GOING TO WORK.  Don't bother with machines running less then 10-15 Khz unless it's a PI.

Most, not all, manual ground balance machines have the ability to switch to auto balance. Check the manual on any you are looking at. Most manuals are available in PDF format to download.

It's all about that moment when metal that hasn't seen the light of day for generations frees itself from the soil and presents itself to me.

I have both, and each has it's merits.  Manual is very important for finding small gold nuggets, but you have to be good with your particular detector to do anything useful with it.

Most relic machines are not going to do any good at nugget hunting unless you find that long lost gold field that kicks out half ounce nuggets from 2" or less.

The new computerized machines work well, but they are mostly designed to make it easier and more fun for the user, meaning they are very effective at silencing tramp iron, bottle tops, pull tabs and junk and enhancing the "good stuff" so all you will dig is the good stuff.  Great for relic hunting, but no good for gold anything, especially nuggets.  I run my detectors mostly in all-metal mode (no discrimination) and get very familiar with the noise it makes.  VERY often, I will get a high tone (typically means good stuff) when the coil passes NEAR an old, or big, or long thin iron object.  If I didn't hear the low iron tone "bounce" to the high tone, I would be thinking good stuff.  Changing the sweep direction, kicking in some discrimination, slowing down or speeding up the sweep - all changes the tone and reaction of the signal, giving more information to the knowledgable hunter about what is down there.

I don't mean to sound like a know-it-all, but you should (and probably DO) know that no detector out there is the perfect all-round machine.  I have a couple of favorites that do pretty well, but like an auto - you can try to buy the best all-round vehicle but invariably, you will often wish you had another one specific to what you need right then.

Wow, this is the kind of stuff I expected to hear from the knowledgable staff at Kellyco, but I didn't.

These guys said it right, I own both types of machines. Personally, I'd get the scorpion. It didnt take long to get bored with a basic machine. By the time spring gets here, you'll be an expert.

I think I have narrowed down to the Garrett Scorpion or a Fisher Gold Bug, both just under 500.00.

Personally, I would pick the Tesoro Lobo Supertrac over these two, but the Fisher Gold Bug would be my 2nd choice.

Looks like a good one and I hear tesoro depth capabilities are great.  Its out of my price range though.
