This question is really funny in a charming kind of way. I understand your eagerness to succeed and your plight and query struck a pleasant chord for me.
The key to finding coins is to find places where people have been in great numbers but detectorists have not. You are in England. There are squillions of places like that. Your garden may not be one of them but many are.
I suggest you go to the local library or historical society and search for old fairs and showgrounds. In years gone by, they were often held away from the madding crowd, as it were. Some were held in farmers' fields, some if the forest clearings of old and some in current parks or fairgrounds. Old racetracks, carnival sites, circus sites and athletic competitions attract huge crowds, all of whom drop things. Go back in time for a while and look at old newspapers for announcements of such events. Compare their location with modern maps to see if the grounds used long ago are now covered with houses or still open land.
Those rainy days where you just cannot go out are begging to be filled with research. Keep a journal of places where you would like to hunt one day and you will find that your cup runs over with excellent prospects for those sunny days.

It's all about that moment when metal that hasn't seen the light of day for generations frees itself from the soil and presents itself to me.
