Ah, just where I was a few months ago - I have now built Gary's Pi, Hammerhead rev C and Surf Pi 1.2 longboard
As I'm in the UK as well I can probably help you with a few bits
A few things to consider;
1. If you have a reasonable detector, Garrett, Whites, Fisher etc.. then it will probably not be as good in all round performance
2. It is very satisfying though when working, any finds seem so much more worthwhile
3. Start as simple as possible
4. Be prepared to loose hours and hours of your life
4. Even with the circuit board working the mechanical construction of the rest isn't easy either
5. You will never have all the parts you want
you will need at a minimum, a soldering iron preferably 15-18w small tip, solder, Digital Multimeter, small side cutters and patience, lots of it
I can offer some help and parts for the 3 boards I have made, I haven't actually come across many more that are proven to work and have any kind of documentation
I have professional pcb's for the hammerhead, surf pi longboards will arrive in about a week - Gary's boards have to be etched by hand and have no soldermask which I found harder to solder and work with but it does work well when finished
research these designs, read everything, read it all again
Drop me a PM if you want any help/advice/parts
