{alt}
If certain members of congress get their way, the one-dollar bill could soon become extinct. There is a serious move afoot to replace the paper dollar with a dollar coin.

Dollar coins have been tried and rejected before. Compared to the Susan B. Anthony dollar, the Ford Edsel was a roaring success.

But this time around, the dollar coin would be forced upon us, because the dollar bill would no longer be made.

And by the way, did George Washington really throw that silver dollar across the Potomac River? You'll hear that story here, too.

I have liked dollar coins over paper for years, but the banks won't get them out and everyone wants to collect them, going into my wallet for a dollar bill is a pain, would much rather have it in my pocket. Also you don't drop many dollar bills, but you would drop dollar coins, more for us.

It would save the gov't money due to how often they have to destroy dollar bills!!   They just don't last as long as a coin!!!

I'm kind of two minds about getting rid of bills and using $1 coins.  Like dinger45 says everybody wants to collect them, but the haven't pulled the bill yet when the released the dollar coins, either.  If they do that people and merchants will be forced to use the coins for change and I believe you will see a lot of them in use.

I don't know if I like the idea of carrying a lot of extra coins in my pocket!  On the other hand, I really don't carry that many $1 bills with me most of the time anyway!  We will see what happens.   Detecting   Wise

Up here in Canada we've had loonies ($1) and twonies ($2) coins for years.  I find they are easier / faster to use than having to rifle through all the bills in your wallet (an even bigger problem in USA as your money is all the same colour).  You do end up with a lot more change in your pockets and that can be a PITA.  On the other hand, if you're the kind of person who just dumps all their change in a bottle when you get home, you can save a small fortune without giving it much thought.  I've heard of people paying for their vacations this way.

As far as metal detecting goes it sure does make for more profitable finds!

Saw a documentary that they have been making millions of dollars per DAY in dollar coins and storing them and not even putting them into use and have millions stored. This has been going on for years, lets get them out in circulation and remove the paper bill.

Paying to replace bills, paying to store the ones we've already made ($1 coins), and paying to make more yearly.  A losing situation.
