O.K. I need some help with a mission. My son just bought a house that has a "dog "fence" buried around the perimeter. He suspects there is a break in continuity. Can i find the break while the fence is energized using my Ace 250? If you know the answer, please be descriptive of how to go about it.
Thanks, Poptop!

Don't know how you could find the break with a detector but I know how to find it with other means.

I  installed one myself many years ago and cant remember exactly. But to make a place that isnt going to zap your friend (like a gate opening) I had to do something with the wire in that spot. Maybe checking for areas like that and of course places where landscaping shovels may have hit it first, will help you find the problem quicker? Good Luck

The brand I bought was Innotek <~~ not sure on that spelling. I used  other training  collars by them because its a local company in my state. I bet they have install videos on their website to help you troubleshoot

Energize the fence holding the dog collar in your hand. Walk along over the top of the fence until you lose the signal. That's where your break is. I know you don't want to get zapped so use an LED with a 2k resistor in series or a small neon indicator. Both of them will light up when the dog would be getting zapped.

You could also use your dog but that's just plain cruel. Or, be kind to your dog and use Homefire instead. Here, Homie. Put this new necktie on, mate. Walkies???

Youse guys are having way too much fun! Innotek also has a page in their troubleshooting section for installing an RF choke and using a radio to check for breaks, I believe I like the collar idea better. Thanks for all the input. Poptop!

That's what I would do.

There's a Number of ways you could do this.

First use a AM Radio to see if you can get a signal from the control box.

The Innotek systems do indeed work at 600 Khz !

A pocket AM radio should be able to detect the signal from a ft or so off the ground.

Plan "B"

Disconnect the Fence Loop from the Control box.

Connect a home brew AM Osc Transmitter to it and follow the fence line.

Hell a set of kids Walky Talkies would do the job.

Family Dollar Store for about $5.00.

We should have a poll to see what the rest of the forum thinks.

Homie: To spark, or not to spark. That is the question.
