Go Up Go Down

Hi,
Newbies to this hobby always seem to worry about whether or not the detector they just got goes deep enough.
I'm of the opinion that "If it's there - You'll find it" (provided of course that the detector is reasonable and not a "toy")
The 3.5 million pound Staffordshire hoard was found with a 20+ year old machine!
So, just for fun and interest..... how deep was your best ever find?
I'll kick it off - Diamond and gold ring at less than 6" (over 20 years ago!)

I found a matched set of Colt 45 revolvers (serial numbers were one digit apart) buried in a trench in the wall of the trench. This bundled weapons cache was wrapped in oilcloth and an old jacket which preserved them as if they were new. The bundle was 24 inches below ground level and 10 inches into the side wall. Had the trench not been there, it's unlikely I would have found them. The jacket was in horrible condition but the oiled canvas was pretty well preserved.

While Colt Firearms does record the serial numbers and to whom they are sold, this particular set was recorded as being sold in a gun deal to a gun shop in a big purchase. They were later sold in New Haven, Connecticut but no record of the sale exists that I could find. I was unable to find the owner's name. I suspect it was buried in that trench as a Union soldier's attempt to keep his treasured sidearms from being confiscated when he was captured. I can think of no other reason to abandon such fine weapons.

It's all about that moment when metal that hasn't seen the light of day for generations frees itself from the soil and presents itself to me.

None of my BEST finds were very deep, my deep finds are usually relics, and not real valuable dollarwise, best find -Diamond ring was in grass, last year had little over $9,000.00 in jewelry and none of it was over 2 inches deep, most my relic finds were not over about 12 in deep. Wise

Found a 14k Gold necklace at about 2". It was almost 24" long and I found it with a cheap Bounty Hunter near an outside basketball court.  Onus

Found 2 diamond rings on top, right among the shells at the beach. They were never spotted by the people looking for nice shells.
