How do you keep up with your research and leads?

I find my self repeating "I read about that somewhere" all the time. I really came to realization that I have to do something different after post some stuff I "remembered" and then could not find the article to verify my memory. So I have decided to start printing, noting, copying, photographing and/or scanning everything I read/see that I feel interesting or noteworthy. Now the question comes. How do ya keep all this information in a logical fashion so they can be easily found later?

For now I think I am going to utilize some software I bought a while back designed around organizing a collection of something like baseball cards or stamps or rocks. I got it to keep track of all my old stock certs. It is very customizable and it allows me to attach images and documents to each "record". Now if I can only remember where I put it!!!!! (I lost a hard drive since I used it last so I have to find the disk)

Welcome to my world Smokin LOL

Like I have said many times I want hard copies. So I print or cut out or make copies of everything. Then it goes into a file.
One guy I share a lot of info with uses a card file system, for small stuff say bank robber treasure at clear creek. He just has a card with a little info and a list of books are news papers were more info can be found. Works for him not me. My file on Padre Island is 4 in thick 90 % of the info I have on padre is in there. I don't want to have to search threw 4000 books looking for a date.
Just do what works for you.

That is my problem!!!

I like the hard copy. I don't think the card thing with hard copy "links" on it would fit me. I would rather five copies of the same page right where I need them.

I have several ways I go about remembering leads. I have computer files where I cut and paste the relevant docs and I place them in files according to location or type. Always remember to back your data up against loss though.

I also make hardcopies so I can scribble on them ideas and notes and maps. I am not as good about filing these appropriately though. I have a lot of mixed notebooks, folders and piles....

If it's a solid enough lead to know at least a general I make a marker and notation on Google Earth. That way when I am headed to an area I can remember all the stuff I want to look for.

I also use a GPS to keep track of locations I have looked or things I have found at certain spots. This was the effect of losing some finds due to faulty memories when I couldn't find the same area again.   Tongue

Everyone has a way that works for them, but unless you have a photographic memory use something more than grey matter!  Grin

They are awsome tools, I have one for the truck and a handheld for the field. Now that I have it I wouldn't be without one. Not long ago I was sure I was at a certain mountain only to find out later I was on a different one after viewing GPS data on the PC.

The stuff I'm seriously working on get's hard copied and put into its own file.   Things I'm serious about working in the near future get hardcopied and put in a file by location.   Things I find interesting but I don't see myself working get bookmarked and a soft copy made (sometimes a hard copy also) and put in a "leads" file.    (Have to admit, though, things aren't nearly as organized as I'd like them to be---except for my Lost Adams file).

I'm still working on a system of marking up my reference maps.

Since Heathen sent me some really neat overlay maps I have been plotting a map board with magnets instead of pushpins. They sell em at freddies, they look like pushpins but with a magnet instead of a pin.

By organized BA, you mean all the papers are in the same room, give or take 50%? Thats how my hardcopies get filed.... Embarrassed
