Exciting is a good word for it. If I found one, I would be the first ever human male to have a litter of kittens right on the spot.

If you search the boards here you will find a few folks who have found US Civil War relics and WWII relics with explosives still intact.

It's all about that moment when metal that hasn't seen the light of day for generations frees itself from the soil and presents itself to me.

I would think that if someone was not use to the idea of digging a find that is explosive would not even have a clue as to what they are digging up intill it too late.
Here in the states landmines should not be something that is dug up all the time.It never crosses my mind on a dig that I may be digging up something explosive.
Maybe I'll be a little more mindful of this on future digs.Hey you can never be 100% sure all the time....... No no!

Not detecting but I was using a small ditch witch trenching machine and a 50 caliber armor piercing round got stuck in it. Got a break from work while the bomb squad came out.

Most of my digs are bombs, lol....pull tabs bottle caps, nails and the like. However I do explode when I find a real treasure.....Problem I've seen is folks coming accross ammo (grarge sales, flea markets etc...) NOT knowing what they have found. Example here in our home town...Some guys where looking over  some explosive device they knew nothing about and did'nt know what they had. While dissecting for its value in the metals, the object exploded causing ER emergency. Hospital had asked how the injury happened? The guys told and showed the hospital what they had been fooling with and that caused the Bomb squad to come from Witchita to dis-arm the other projectile devices they had. Moral of my story here is....if ya don't know what it is....stay clear of it and call the proper authoritys. Some folks today do not know what they may be fooling with and even though old and harmless looking, it could take your breath away!

I lived in the UK from 1979-1985.   They was finding UXB (Unexploded Bombs) twice a week.

The Telecoms folks would find em.

The Folks digging a new Road would find em.

There all over the place.

Yep!   Only thing they didn't find was the Land Mines like you can find in Africa and over in the Europe locations.

Kids and Farmers still find em in Africa this day.

here in the US, if you are digging in the area of a Civil War battlefield, you'd be smart to remember unexploded ordinance IS found regularly.   As for landmines, I haven't found any, but I know a couple of guys who have found some "training" mines in old manuever areas (and we're not talking non-functional mock-ups so the troops would know what they looked like, we're talking about the kind that went "boom" during training exercises)
