Go Up Go Down

I just saw an article in W&E Sept issue about a sling designed for metal detecting. "Limbsaver Comfort-tech metal detecting sling."
We were planning to go to UK to do some serious coin shooting and I understand we'll be in the field ten hours at a time.
That's a lot of arm swinging.
Has anybody had any experience with this item??
Is it worth the consideration???

Hi Homefire:
This might be a repeat message.  I replied yesterday and half way through the reply it disappeared.  I wasn't sure if it was sent or not.
Any way,  thanks for your reply.  It seems that our'e the one who has answers for me.
My wife has extremely weak wrists and I don't think she could swing a detector for any reasonable length of time.
When I saw this "comfort sling" I thought it might be an answer.
As you pointed out, it might be cumbersome and more aggravation than help.

Let me remind you that you asked about a specific brand and model rather than asking about slings in general. Try a broader question next time. Even the one answer you DID get was not answering your question.

Just be more open to other brands of sling. You will also find some older messages here with information on building your own sling or modifying one from a weed trimmer that got praise from the suggested use.

Hi  Bowbender

In my opinion if the detector is well balanced there will be no need for any sling. I have arthritis in both my elbows and I can swing my machine from sunrise to sunset. OK I'm tired at the end of the day but the comfort zone come from the fact that all the detector that I build are very well balanced. Here is how I do it, all the weight is on the shoulder and not on the forearm (that kills me in 20 min) so the battery and all electronics are at the rear of the detector, the shaft is at an angle that allows me to have my arm in an almost walking position (wonder why the manufactures never put more effort into that) through this design I can have fun for many hours. In my opinion if you need a sling to hold the front end of the detector then the design is up to crap ( I'm referring to the shaft not the machine) So why not re-design the shaft and weight distribution?

All the best
Xavier

Hi Golddigger.
Very sound advice.
I started thinking about making my own after I saw what is involved and the cost.
$30.00 for a strap with a slip ring!  N U T S!
Can you please tell me where there might be instructions for making my own?

Imagine this. A strap around your chest just below the breastbone, around your diaphragm. From that strap, over your shoulder like suspenders are two more straps. All three should have adjustable buckles. From the chest strap, a sliding loop with a Velcro (tm) ending to hook up the detector making that strap also adjustable. If you need extra support from the weight, try a loop over the neck in addition to this one I described here. But in all truth, you won't need the next strap. Surprisingly, pushing outward gently reduces the downward pressure from gravity.

For a cheap source of strapping material and buckles, Home Depot in the strapping section has luggage tie downs in sets of 4 very cheap with plastic snap buckles on some of them. In the end, for less that $10.00, you can have 4 belts to play with and make up this affair as I describe it. While you're there, look at the strap affairs for weed eaters. The one I looked at for my wife was under $20.00 and would suit a detector fine.
