Go Up Go Down

Went hunting this morning and my lab came along as usual. Used to duck hunt with her, but we are both old and retired. She sits by my side as I scan the ground. This morning she took off to a tree and after some smelling, she started digging with her paws I rode over to take a look and it turned out to be a fresh buck scrape. This got me thinking. They train dogs to sniff out almost anything anymore. I know this is far out. But I wonder if certain minerals have a distinctive odor to dogs? You can see where I am going.

Train her to sniff out gold and silver!  Let us know how she does!   I have 3 Bassett Hounds and they are said to have the 2nd best nose in the dog world.  I may have a bonanza here!  (Now, where can I get some silver & gold?)

Police dogs are trained to sniff out money. I would bet a dog could tell the difference between gold and silver by smell. Ive had dogs all my life and always play sniff it out games with them. I take different food items and step on it, then go hide it and let the dog sniff it out by my tracks. Give the dog a bite of whatever it is in the house and then let him go out and find his prize lol. Hotdogs, Donuts, whatever, he'll find it! I'm amazed at what they can smell.  I dont know but I'm sure there is info online about that. Hell maybe they can sniff out the date on a coin and bark to tell you before you dig!  lmao

Go Up Go Down

We have discussed this topic several times and its always very interesting.

A few things I have figured out after talking with several dog trainers and other long time treasure hunters.

Gold does not deteriorate so it has no smell so gold is out. Silver lead copper all deteriorate over time and give off a smell so it may be possible to train a dog to sniff them out.
Several trainers have told me that if it could be done it would not work around wet sand or other highly mineral areas. That is when I lost interest I wanted to try it in areas like the National Seashore where detectors are a NO NO

If she could just narrow down a promising area to hunt, i would be happy.

Seldom beat me to it, but if you use the search function to search the entire forum for "dogs", you might find some interesting discussions.

Best I've been able to do in employ one of my dogs to dig a little.

Crazy thing sees me digging and she gets right in there to see what's up.

If I stand back the Dirt starts to fly!  LOL out in the Deserts OK but don't think it would go over so well in a park.
