Metal detector search
Hi All, I am still trying to buy an MD suitable for a beginner like me. It has to be simple, effective and most of all CHEAP as I do not know if I will have the time or enthusiasm to use it very much. I just have a craving to try this interesting sport for myself but even the second hand machines seem to be expensive. I hope to get one soon and get out there to see if I catch the bug. The interest is all in my head at the moment. This is because some time back while out walking I found an old "B" hand bell. The hand strap was perished and the clapper corroded. It was partially sticking out of the ground and ever since I have wondered what else could be down there. I took it home, cleaned it up and replaced the clapper. It looks nice and sounds sweet. It is probably worth nothing but is just so interesting. How did it get there on the bank of the Caledonian Canal near where I live?

The mystery behind each find makes it such an interesting hobby, mate. For a reasonably priced beginner's unit, try the Tesoro Compadre which normally sells used for around $100.00 US. Even the old pros use that unit so don't let the price tag fool you into thinking it's a low end machine. The only thing "low end" about it is the price.

I love my Compadre.

It's all about that moment when metal that hasn't seen the light of day for generations frees itself from the soil and presents itself to me.

Hi GD, thanks for the advice. I am watching many MDs on ebay but here in the UK they seem to command a very high resale price. As I mentioned in my article I am very intrigued as to how and even why a small hand bell came to be lost or dumped by the side of the Caledonian Canal in the highlands of Bonnie Scotland, if only it could speak. Anyway if I keep watching ebay I am sure something suitable will turn up eventually. It is great to get advice from an expert with so much enthusiasm. Keep up your good work. MANY THANKS.

Hello Augusta,

      welcome to the hobby.
I would suggest frequenting car boot sales......but go prepared.  I've purchased all but two of my detectors used (those two were gifts...and one of them was purchased used).   Before I made the purchase, I researched the ratings for the most popular metal detectors in the beginner to mid-level user range so that I knew what each could do; what type of reputation the manufacturer and the particular model have/had; and the predominant "market" rate (both new and used) for each.   Then I set my own maximum that I would pay for each.
Golddigger is correct that a lot of the older models can be picked up for quite a bit under their original price.  This will allow you to get a better quality machine for about the price (and often considerably less) than you would pay for a brand new entry level detector.
As for shopping for a used machine, this and the next 2 or 3 months should be a real good time to pick up new slightly used machines from people who don't have the patience to pursue the hobby.

Good luck,

BA

Take a look at the Garrett Ace 250, its an excellent machine and very easy to use and at about $212.00 with some extra goodies its a real deal and Garrett is wonderful to work with if you have a problem. I purchased mine through A & S detectors and they shipped it right out. I also purchased the garrett pointer and A & S was the cheapest at 119.00 is sounds expensive but after using it, it makes looking for treasure after you have dug the hole a breeze.

Hi BA, Great to hear from you, great advice. This club is fantastic, so many fans of the sport and so much help. One problem is that up in the Highlands of Scotland we don't have too many car boot sales so I have to watch the good old ebay and everybody outbids me as I have my price limit. Anyway I'll find one soon. MANY THANKS.

You might try putting up some wanted sign on bulletin boards in your area.  It seems that a lot of people buy a detector and then throw it in the closet when they get frustrated with it.

Hi dinger45, still looking. Watching a few on ebay. Hope to find one soon. Thanks for your reply. JOHN.
Hi Azjake, Thanks for your advice but I live in a small village and only know of one other person with this interest so I have to keep using ebay unless one falls out of the sky. MANY THANKS.

I have the Garrett Ace 150 for about $150.  I just starting using it and is very easy to use right out of the box.

Hi MB, I am still looking and trying to decide what to go for. I have looked at the Garrett ACE 150 but been told that the ACE 250 would be more than worth the difference. I am also looking at the new WHITES COINMASTER. I keep getting conflicting reports as to which is best. MANY THANKS.
Has anyone got any advice on the Seben Deep Target or Extreme from their experiences of these MDs.
Hi GD and ALL, got any views on the WHITES LIBERTY Di, got a chance on thus one maybe.
