I have been eyeing the spectra V3. It does most everything including meteorite. The V3 is expencive but Looking at some of the prices of meteorite detectors the V3 is not as expencive as you may think.  The V3 is problably ment for the more experienced metal detectorist. It looks like it could be a bit complicated for the beginner. The easiest way is just finding an area of impact use a magnet like the Meteorite Men do.  Wise

Operating in all metal mode, most of your good detectors should pick up most meteorites on or near the surface.   Your biggest challenge will be separating the meteorites from the "meteorwrongs".....by the way one of the early shows had a close up of their detectors.  At least one of them was using a Fisher F75.    For the most part, they're using the magnets as a quick field check and to pick up any meteorites they find ON the surface.

I believe what the Spectra V3  has is an extra Meteorite icon that will help discriminate a meteorite from iron.

Koda57,

I use a White's GMT for hunting meteorites. I hunt mainly irons with it and it is a great machine. I also have friends who use them to hunt stoney meteorites in places such as Franconia and Gold Basin to name a few. Any detector will pick up the irons. The stoneys are a bit more difficult depending on the content of iron. Chondrites have different content levels and are classified as such:

H chondrite have High iron contents, and smaller chondrules than L and LL chondrites. ~40% of ordinary chondrite falls belong to this group.
L chondrites have Low iron contents. About half of ordinary chondrite falls are L chondrites, which makes them the most common type of meteorite to fall on Earth.
LL chondrites have Low iron and Low metal contents. Only 1 in 10 ordinary chondrites is LL.
The LL chondrites are much harder to pick up with a detector. You really have to know your machine very very well to set it just right.

I have hunted with friends who own $5000 detectors to $250 detectors and have seen them all be successful with all different levels.

Good luck and good hunting!

Ironman

Those who say it cannot be done.....
should not interrupt the person doing it!

You will never find Treasure.....
unless you hunt for it!
