As coil swingers, we all dig our share of pop tabs, beaver-tail and modern.  What I do with them is clean them and I recycle the beaver-tails . . . but the modern ones I clean and then donate to either Ronald McDonald house or to a local dialysis charity.  Some have told me "You actually clean them and then donate them?  My gosh!  You waste enough water to exceed the value of the tabs!"  Maybe they are right, but I look at it as another way to make good use of what I dig.  Call me a fool if you wish, but I'm going to continue doing so.  As of now, I've probably donated 500+ dug tabs and hopefully it has made someone else's life a tad better.

These tabs have no special value other than the fact that they are scrap aluminum. They take up less space than the cans, so are easier to collect and store. They are made of the same aluminum as the can and are worth the same by weight.

I just throw them in a bucket and send to the recyclers with cans  every few months then donate the check to the woman crisis center

Your efforts are admirable! There used to be a tale that the tabs, being a higher grade aluminum alloy, were worth a lot more money than the cans. If this is so, it is only marginal. Schools like to collect the tabs in grade school so that the kiddies can see what a million of something looks like. You are not alone in spirit, I used to remove the  tabs diligently and had gallons of them, gave them to the schools. But if your prime objective is to donate meaningfully, your time would be better spent collecting more cans and take those cans to the recyclers with the dirt just 'knocked off' and take the proceeds to your favorite charity. they will receive a magnitude more benefit from your efforts. I just cash the few I find in with my cans as well.

A bit of Gas money.

Thanks Homefire - sorry to perpetuate a rumor about the dialysis stuff.  I had always stuffed Ronald McDonald house boxes before and never really saw the dialysis donate places.  I suppose there is a reason why!   Grin

Our recycling around here won't take them if they are dirty.  Same goes for cans.  Frustrating, but they don't want to pay for the extra weight.  With the tabs, the recycle containers we have here, have holes large enough to allow tabs to slip through and litter the yard or street, so that isn't a good option either.  I'll figure out something.  In any case, I appreciate all the folks chiming in. - IP
