After replying to an earlier post " how did you get interested in metal detecting....." I thought I would share my story.
As a kid growing up in Southern California there was a woman who had Bible study at her home for the neighborhood kids, her house was like a museum full of rocks, gems, minerals, and fossils that she and her late husband had collected from all over the world. She would tell the story of the Bible with an intricate display of minerals that changed colors under differant levels of ulta violet lights. I was fascinated by her stories of the adventures her and her husband had as avid rockhounds. She literally had tons of rocks, gems, minerals, and fossils in her home and back yard, her husband even had a form of petrofied wood named for him as being the first to identify and classify it.
My family hit on hard times and we moved and i lost contact with this woman but my fascination with rocks and adventure never went away. Even to this day rocks speak to me and tell me take them home, and I now have my own collection. But as some of you know life sometimes gets in the way of your dreams and I never did have any of my own amazing adventures, with raising three kids and supporting my family there was never any time.
Then in 2007 I was diagnosed with transition cell carcinoma and lost a kidney to this cancer, part of the recovery was to walk, walk and walk some more. Well my wife felt that I did not get out and walk enough so she bought me a hand held GPS we had talked about geocaching before and now I had the time to do it, this gave us lots of great family adventure at a low cost and and it was great for my recovery. Then again near the end of last year the Dr. told me the cancer was back in my bladder so in Febuary of this year they removed it and once again it was walk walk walk.
I have allways wanted to go metal detecting and here was a new reason to get out and walk more, not knowing when or if I will be returning to my old job I bought me and my wife detectors and now we are learning how to use them. Our 15 yearold daughter, the only child still at home thinks I have lost it but she thought the same thing about geocaching now she wants to go more than I do.
So Thats how I ended up wanting to be a treasure hunter and I am sure my family and I will have years of fun with our new hobby.
Thank you for reading and Happy Hunting
