For whom?

My detecting club has an extended family of very successful hunters most of whom are using very good detectors.  We recently had a competitive and one of the members of this family had his kids there.  One of the kids (under 6 years old) had a National Geographic detector.   Given the options, I don't think this family would start the kid off with total trash.

Hi BitburgAggie, Thanks for the reply. I see your entries regularly and I reckon you know what you're talking about. How do you rate the Prospector type MD's? Can they pick up anything and at what depth? MANY THANKS.

Augusta, is the detector for you or for someone else?  Also, do you know if it will mainly be used for coin and relic hunting, nugget hunting, or hunting on a beach?  What price range are you looking at?

I really appreciate the compliment, but there are a lot of our members that are much better qualified at pointing out the strengths and weaknesses of the different detectors.   My only advise is to decide what you plan on using the detector for the most then buy the best metal detector you can for the amount you can afford....even if it means buying used (and all but one of my detectors was bought used).    While waiting for others to chime in with their opinions and recommendations I'd suggest looking at the following urls:

Finally, if you can search THunting.com using the "Advanced Search" field at the top of the page and "Search Entire Forum" for best beginner detector to see what has been written on this question by members previously.  Basically if you can afford a Garrett Ace 250 or one of the Tesoros those seem to be the favorite beginning detectors, but there are several others that get high marks (even the Garrett Ace 150 seems to get pretty good marks, but strictly as a beginning detector).

Good luck,

BA

Hi BA, Yes it's for me and it's for general hunting. I'm sorry to say that I've got a very limited budget at the moment and so I am watching the Bay but keep getting outbid. I'll keep trying and sometime I'll get lucky. MANY MANY THANKS.

Augusta, one thing you might try is putting a post in the "Wanted To Buy" section of the marketplace forum here at THunting.   Let them know that you are looking for a good, gently used beginners detector in the UK.   Who knows, someone might decide they got enough detectors now that they don't need the extra spare in the closet.   Lord knows you've been looking for one for a while now.
