Aluminizer is right. A few other points... It's hard to make a decision just on what the value of the detector is. An expedition could just be going away for a couple days, or a couple weeks. You certainly want to do your homework - these threads have write-ups in them about all the different brands: Whites, Garrett, etc. LOTS of reading to do here!
You may even decide that you want to go with one for water, and another for land. If you're new to the hobby, maybe you don't want to invest a ton of money at first and try something as a good 'starter' metal detector first.
Once you have done your research - there's a company you may want to check out is KellyCo. They have great service, and several people in the forum have recommended them. Perhaps they may have the model you're looking for.
