Go Up Go Down

Hello everyone,
I'm new here and have been reading this site and many others to learn about metal detecting. Have been trying to decide on what to buy to start with to see if I will stick to it without to much investment at first. Anyways, went to my folks house today and told my dad about my interest in MD and he said he had one in the garage that I could have. Never ever new he had one! Can anyone tell me about it? It is a Micronta VLF discriminator MD. On the back of the manual it is apparently from Radio Shack a division of Tandy Corp. Any help or info would be appreciated.
Thanks

Hello Martin,

thanks for joining us and I'm sure you will enjoy your new hobby very much!

Radio Shack had produced a line of metal detectors from the 70s to 80s fromw hat I remember. What's important is that your machine has allready a discrimination feature.

Best get some coins and go out in your backyard and see at what depth you can still pick them up with your machine when laying them on the ground. You should get at least 2 - 3'' depth.

You can also visit our partner site at

for more information. They have some experts who are familiar with older machines.

Sincerly,

You can always look around for a good used machine also, that way if you don't enjoy the hobby you haven't put a lot into it..and if you do like it, you can buy a better machine and use the first as a back up.

The problem with a cheaper machine ( the Radio Shack types) is that you may not be able to discriminate well, which means you will be digging a lot of garbage...that is very frustrating, trust me!!

I found a radio shack $29 detector wrapped around a pole in high grass several years ago while hunting in VA...strangest find I ever made with a metal detector.

These were the least expensive units in their day and not made very well . If it still works you'll get no more than a couple inches depth and it will not be a stable detector at all. Try it out and see what it will do for you other wise let me know and I'll do what I can to ehlp you into a decent new detector.  Cool

i have found thousands of dollars worth of stuff w/radioshack eq.
dont let nobody influence you different
they dont go too deep but who gives a crap for now.
find some old outoftheway gathering spot & go to town w/what you have.

cant hurt to practice for haf hour or so in the yard learning the(exact)sound you'll
be wanting to hear out in the field.

dig everything that beeps tho.i try to spend less than a minute digging..that way its not to boringnyou can keep moving

go get'm~you'll soon be addicted like the rest of us. Grin

Welcome to the forum Martin!  Smiley What is the model number on that unit of yours? I've used a few RS detectors in my time and I'm here to tell ya like dr.dtector said too, these machines will find good stuff, if you just give them half a chance. The guys that say they only go an inch or two deep, are blowing smoke! I've found silver dimes in five inches of heavily mineralized soil with mine lots of times!

Let me know that model # and I'll dig up some specs for you.  Cool

Hey Larry,
It is a 4300. But I am doing better now. I just bought a Discovery 3300 from Tony. Still trying to learn how to use it. Thanks for responding to my post.
