One of my clients just applied for the FREE metal detector permit for New York City for the year 2011. He was notified the free permit will now cost $ 20.00. Prospect Park in Brooklyn NY is now open, after much negotiating, to two days per week - Tuesday and Saturday. I guess that's an improvement from NO metal detecting at all.  Central Park in NYC still remains off limits. They close parks down and charge for the priviledge. What's next. A nation wide tax on metal detector owners ? Give me a brake already. Good hunting to all  Ettore

I think that over the next few years we will see more and more parks and beaches that require  metal detector permits.

While I would prefer wide open detecting on public land, requiring a permit is definitely preferable to closing the area to detecting altogether.

Hey Homefire. I'm from Brooklyn, NY. Not many (if any) open fields or lots in the city that aren't fenced in. I've gotten the free permit for a few years. It lists all the parks throughout the city where detecting is allowed. It lists beaches too, but i don't think you really need the permit for beaches All you need is to fill out a form and include a copy of your drivers license. The catch is you're suposed to report any "significant" finds to the parks department. That includes anything of historical significance or any coin that is no longer in circulation. If they want it you have to give it to them. If they want to charge me and do away with that clause, I'll pay it gladly
