I received my application for the 2011 metal detecting permit. The parks dept added a few parks to the list. But then reading the rules, it now says you can't dig within 50 feet of shrubs or trees.  :oIn some the parks, especially my favorite, it's going to be next to impossible to dig. I'm hoping it's a typo, and when I get the actual permit, it'll say 5 feet. That I can deal with. By the way, a while back a member said that NYC was going to charge for the permit. Not true it's still free.

Badge?  I Don't Need No Stinkin Badge!

How much do the Muggers have to pay for there Badges?

You should Charge them to Go into the Parks, I'm thinking.

  Hello Frazdad
I'm not sure about the distance rule in NYC parks but it wouldn't surprise me if it was 50 feet.I do hope it is a typo.I have see stranger laws before.... Tongue

I wish you luck with that......

As long as you are allowed to detect within that range, you should be all right to use a coin probe and pry up your targets. Digging with a shovel or garden trowel is digging. Using a coin probe is prying up an object.

Bummer. Time to take it to the polls and replace some petty desk bound politicians.

Luckily I'm friendly with one of the parks dept workers in my favorite park. We spoke last year. She didn't care if I dug as long as I filled the hole. She didn't even know there was such a thing as a metal detecting permit. So as long as she's there I should be okay.
Also with all the budget cuts there aren't that many park police anymore. In fact I've never seen the park police at this particular park. So I might chance it, any thoughts?

Good try GD but it looks like these guys don't even want a detector in the parks.I guess they didn't want anyone to side step the law by using a probe and pry technique.
Coin popping and digging is two different animals and them seem to cover them both  No no!
