I received permission for three new properties within the last month.  This is not for detecting, but prospecting for gold, but I would imagine it works the same way regardless of whether your prospecting or detecting though.  In all three cases these were customers of mine.  During my discussions I always bring up my hobby.  In two cases, I knew the property my customer was on had produced gold in the past, so I just sort of worked my way into asking permission after having developed a good relationship with them.  In the third case I didn't know the customer had prospective property, but I went to deliver some product to him one day and noticed a stream behind his building.  I asked him if I could poke around, and found three small "green gold" (high sliver content) nuggets in about 15 minutes.  I showed him what I had found and when he tried to hand them back to me I told him he could keep them, and then asked permission to come back and sluice/pan.  He said no problem... anytime I wanted.  You just need to make sure that when you go to ask permission you ensure them that you won't be leaving visible scars on their property.  In the case of streams, you point out the self healing nature of stream beds.  You promise not to dig up the banks of their streams, etc.  For land prospecting (or detecting) you promise to ensure that they will never even be able to tell that you had been there.  It never hurts to offer to give them half of what you find either... although most of them will decline the offer.

Bigwater has given you some excellent advice.  You'll find even more on the subject if you look at an earlier discussion we had on the subject here

ajg3151 -
I usually knock on the door.   If you receive a no, try again in a few months.
I always offer to split the finds.  I think of it like a "pay lake" would be for fishing.
I always have a backup detector that I offer for them to use and I would show them how to use it.

best of luck
ken
