 Detecting
Hi guys,
From your experience(s), what pin point probes will positively indicate small nuggets of about 0.3 grams at about 2.5 cm or 1 inch distance?

What type would such a probe be, i.e. a PI, VLF or other type?

Are there any circuit diagrams to build such a unit yourself or perhaps are there any kits available?

I am after such a device which will hopefully make nugget recovery a bit easier. Kiss

Best regards Smiley
Frank

Hey,

In 'Lost Treasure' Dec. 2008, Cris Gholson (master prospector) has an article testing Garrett's Pro Pointer. He used it to pinpoint nuggets down to 0.2 grams; did not say distance from nugget. He said it was "incredibly useful for prospecting". He also said "other than not being able to turn off the LED and vibrate alarms, I have nothing but praise for the new Garrett product".

Hi,
I have one of the Whites "bullseye" probes.
I tried a test with it on a tiny piece of gold from an earring (i would guess about .5 of a gram)
The best it could do was about a quarter of an inch.
The big problem I could see is that all probes seem to detect for some way along the probe itself as well as at the end (About 2 inches).
So using it in a hole for something that small could be a bit of a nightmare.
I have heard that the Garrett probes are really good though!
Theres a thing called the "Uniprobe" that looks like it might suit your purposes.
A headphone based P.I. probe that can be converted to a full P.I. detector by just plugging in the appropriate coil........ bit expensive though!

If you can stand the price ($350 @ Kellyco) the Uniprobe would be top contender. It is headphone based; flip a switch and go from detector to probe. The depth on this thing is phenominal, 5+ inches. If I didn't have Sunray probes on both my Explorers I would definitely be looking hard at a Uniprobe.

Paul that $350 unit is nothing more than a regular PI detector with a ferrite rod coil  ( ferrite rod coil about $10 ) . The PI detector in the head phone is just a small PI detector which should work with a regular coil . Instead of the regular coil they now connected a ferrite rod coil . Somwhere on this forum I have posted a schematic of this ferrite rod coil . By changing the amount of windings you can make this coil work on your PI detector .    Cornelius

Thanks Cornelius,
Good info. I'd like to download this info, but since I am a new member, I am not allowed until I have at least 15 postings.  Undecided
I had been thinking of using "Gary's" of Chemelec PI system but it's a bit unstable, therefore I had in mind to use a ferrite core, rather than air core.
Your comments confirmed my toughts. Thank you for your valuable input.
Best regards from Down Under.
Frank

Hi Frank,
I built the "EE Pi" detector.
It's available as a kit in the u.k. from Magenta Electronics for about ?65.
Very good little detector.
I'm about to wind the ferrite probe for it (Thanks Cornelius!) - I'll let you know how I get on.

Paul in case you are forgetting , you can use a solid ferrite rod  ( the hollow rods are not easy to get ) . A rod out of an old radio ( antenna ) would work .  Insulate the rod with tape and start winding one layer only . The winding have to be put on in a manner that you will have the best signal  ( you have to do this by trial )    After you have the right result , insulate the windings with another layer of tape .   Cornelius
