Go to Harbor Freight web site, they have one for about $18.00 dollars US. Comes with a 9V battery and carry case, it works great....DW

I have used a lot of pinpointers.  I have (obviously) WASTED a lot of money doing it.  I used the ones at harbor freight... For the money and in a pinch... its OKAY.  About 1" reading... you cant move any dirt around with it or you will damage the internal portion of the pin pointer.  I have used Whites Pinpointer as well... More expensive (needlesstosay) and read about 2" down.  I will never be without my Garrett Pro pinpointer, however!  It is truly amazing.  When I hit a target, I simply place the pin pointer down on the service and it will read exactly where I need to dig or [gently] place my all / screwdriver in.  I can usually get down between 3-4 inches easily.  It costs a lil bit more... but you will end up with it anyway if you are serious about staying with metal detecting.  I even use it nugget shooting while prospecting.
From the Garret website:
Patented proportional audio/vibration pulse indicates targets
■ Patented scraping blade to sift through the soil to speed recovery
■ Meets IEC 60529 IP 66 standards for dust and water protection. Entire unit can be rinsed/cleaned under water.
■ Twice the battery life of other pinpointers with LED lights
■ 9 volt battery included
■ Exclusive one-button retune provides fast adjustment—without having to step through multiple sensitivity settings. Retuning allows user to quickly
◦ Shrink detection field to precisely pinpoint large targets
◦ Tune out mineralized ground, wet beach sand, etc.
◦ Help gauge target size/distance
◦ Help identify edges of large target
◦ Pinpoint multiple targets versus one large target signal

Happy Hunting!  Hope this helps Great

You can "toughen" the Harbor Freight unit by using plastic wire ties and a lucite rod (or wooden dowel). You cut the dowel to the same length as the overall device and then using the wire ties, strap the dowel and the pinpointer together. Put about 4 wire ties on the shaft and a couple of more on the body leaving access to the battery pack if you can. If you can't, just cut the ties off when you replace the battery and put new ones on afterwards. Various shipments have different placements for the battery access.

Cool idea.  Kind of scares me that a pinpointer wouldnt read those wire ties, though.  How much else is it not reading?

I think GD is referring to zipties (made of plastic) although you can use a wrap of wire to detune your pinpointer and get a bit more range out of it.

Caleb is right. I refer to the nylon zip ties. You can get them for a dollar right in Harbor Freight while you are there. Too easy.

Detecting Thanks for the comments. I have chosen to go with the Garrett Pro pinpointer. Ordered from a supplier in the U.S. and saved $50.00 on the local price. Pickings have been good lately and I have lots of sites to go over. Mainly coins. I am trying to speed up recovery of the more elusive finds. The Nautilus is doing a great job but occasionally I am scratching around too long. An old Aussie 1 cent and two cent piece in copper gives a strong signal  at depth similar to  $1.00 and $2 coins at shallower depths. i am hoping the pinpointer will help me judge the depth better and so save some digging. I use a  sharpened screwdriver to work the coins out of the turf. I will post further comments once i have tried the garrett out. it will arrive in a week or so..
