It has been raining on and off now for 5 days and I prefer to stay dry in the cold weather. It is winter down in Oz.
Instead of going out, I did my preventative maintenance on my two favorite machines, the Bounty Hunter Mark IV and the Minelab. The Bounty Hunter is still in warranty but the Minelab is long out. I opened both and found an archaeological record of nearly everywhere I have been inside each. No kidding. Sand, tiny pebbles, grit, grass and all manner of natural and unnatural debris somehow found itself into the allegedly sealed cases. No surprise. When I looked closer, there were all manner of places for stuff to get inside.
Using a small brush which I misted with distilled water to make it slightly damp, I brushed away all debris and dirt from the inside. The water mist will help to stop any static electricity from killing your components and distilled water is harmless when it dries. When distilled water is applied and still liquid, it picks up salts and stuff from your board so wait till it dries before you turn your machine back on should you decide to clean your own equipment. I use a heat gun from a distance of a foot to dry the boards.
While I was inside, I replaced the two battery connectors in the Minelab as they were both a bit flaky and intermittent. Those little nine volt battery cap connectors can get worn out from lots of battery replacements.
Using my oscilloscope, I tweaked and tuned both of them up on my test bed and now I am armed and extremely dangerous to all metal objects! Now where did I put my Spandex(tm) tights with the big red S on them? Oh,and my cape is at the dry cleaners. Hope it is back by the time the weather clears up.

It's all about that moment when metal that hasn't seen the light of day for generations frees itself from the soil and presents itself to me.
