Is a 1200.00 dollar detector 6 times better than a 200.00 one?

No, not necessarily.
It's like asking if a Porsche is six times better than, say, a Mini.
They both do the same thing, both go from a to b... just sometimes quicker in the Porsche, sometimes slower if there's a traffic jam!
IMHO - ALL detectors are overpriced.
If you were to know the costs of manufacturing one you'd be horrified at the price you are paying.
Problem is that it's a "Niche" market - they aren't sold in vast quantitys.
Probably why there are no Japanese detectors!
A better question would be "Whats the best detector for me in my price range? I want to hunt XXXXX"
I see you have a Garrett Ace 250... Great little detector!
I have a Minelab Explorer II - Very Expensive
My son has a Garrett Ace150 - Reasonably Priced
Sometimes he finds stuff I can't even register!

Not to me!

People now days think a machine should tell them when to dig.

Thats good for me.

I dig all the suspect signals.   Pull Tab sounds and the lot.

How may gold rings have people walked away from because the machine says "WALK"

Hello Everyone . This is a Great Subject , markwallace did start a good topic here !! And everyone is taking it in a good direction . Yes , ALL Metal Detectors are overpriced !!! Because the two top Manufacturers Whites and Minelab only have Two Year Warranties . Some expensive machines only offer a one year Warranty !!!...If you spend one thousand U.S. Dollars minimum for a top-of-the-line machine and it Breaks on the 25th month . It now has cost you $500. per year just to Metal Detect . And you probably only used it 6 months each year when the weather is good . If you are a Tech you can repair it , unless the micro-processor has a complete memory dump !!!  Then you must send it to the factory because the hex files are not available to the consumer . Labor rates plus parts are not cheap . I think Tesoro Has the Best Warranty in the Industry .Anyway , I think All Metal Detectors should be cut in price by over one third . A thousand dollar Machine should be at $700 . If not all manufacturers should offer a "Full Complete lifetime warranty" , no exceptions !!!! I think the Big Manufacturers can adjust to the economy , EVERYONE ELSE HAS !!!!!.....Thank-You Everyone for posting on this subject .

Take Care and Best Regards to All !!!......................Eugene52

No-one has mentioned the fact.

Detecting is 90% man 10% machine.  Mad Mad Mad
The longer you own a machine for,
the better you can understand what it's telling you.  Touch Touch Touch
So guy #1 has a $200 machine and owned it for 4 years.   Sunny Sunny Sunny
guy #2 has a $1000 machine and owned  it for 6 months.   Laughing Laughing

No a $1200 machine is not 6 x better than a $200  machine.  Violent Violent Violent
Although it will have some +++ the cheaper one won't have.  Mad Mad Mad
It all boils down to the individual operator of each machine.

Hi Markwallace
Good subject.    I owen both an expensive ( Minelab GP Exterme $3500 )  gold detector and a cheap ( Bounty Hunter $ 200 ) coin detector I will admit that both detectors are for different purposes , I havent found any gold nuggets with the GP Extreme yet but the day after I bought the  Bounty Hunter I went down to the park and picked up $50 bucks worth of coins in a few hours its light and and easy to use only 2 knobs and a button , but I feel like I want to upgrade to a $1000 plus coin detector . Thats been a harder  decision to make than finding a gold nugget.  Which detector is going to better than what Ive got ?

The answer is no.

I still do better with TR detectors (Beachcomber 6D and CS 550) than I do with a motion one. It's because I use my EARS while detecting.

You pay the big money for sometimes unnecessary gadgets. Like a display with 6,8,or 12 segments telling "foil, nickel, tab, a.s.o...

I do not use the display on my Quattro, just listen to the signals in the ferrous mode.

I'm kind of a slow sweeper. That pays off, better than a more expensive machine.

As for top of the line digital models with ID displays telling more than the usual basic stuff, like Etrac, ision, Explorer, I still think tey are averpriced too, but then the available functions might be priceless for the seasoned treasure hunter.

My two (euro)cents.

HH

It's 90% person and 10% beeper,   I got a very good friend, that has a goodly amount of income, and buys the latest-most improved-fanciest detectors on the market, few years back I got the same kind of fever and started with the trying to keep up with him, well I couldn't do that, not enough money.  But did learn a lesson while detecting with couple other guys that had old OBSOLETE, detectors=ONLY ONES THEY EVER OWNED OR HAD, w0w did they ever show me what it was all about, showed the other folk too, they knew their machines, so as a result, whenever I get another machine (usually by trading or something to that effect) i always dedicate at least 100 hours to that machine ONLY to learn it, (this is what Charles Garrett reccomends=Smart fella), and after my hours of  detecting with that machine , I make a decision, swap or keep, sure there are detectors that are specialized-and they do a better job on their thing, but you have to know how to use it, no matter what it cost you. Wise Wise Wise

Probally not but in the end if the more expensive machine increases your confidence or enjoyment it might be worth every penny. A less expensive machine that you don't feel confident in and seldom use will find a lot less then a machine that you are confident in and keeps you excited and hunting on a regular basis.

No. They may have 6 times the features for those who are addicted to it. Some don't need pinpointing, tone ID, graphic ID, manual ground balance, imaging, ratchet ID, overload signals, etc. I bought a Walmart version of the BH Tracker for $59 and had this kind of day at 2 schools I had previously searched with 3 excellent metal detectors!
