I am thinking of a Garretts pointer. I saw a couple used on videos and appears promising. I'll check further. Thanks, Coloma Gold

Some things I like about the Garrett it's heavy duty. Softer soil you can even use it to scrape away dirt or push in to the dirt. It seems to have a long battery life. With the holder its pretty easy to carry and use. Some holder and pin pointers seem to be a pain to get out. But its pretty secure in the holder. Most items I hunt for (Relic material) it has a good range. Plus if you hold it near an item then turn off and back on it "detunes" it and makes the field smaller for those well hidden objects. A one hand operation. Others you are holding with one hand and changing the adjustment knob with your other hand.

I'm new to metal detecting, started without a pinpointer. I purchased a Garrett propointer after about a month and haven,t looked back since.  Easy to use, long battery life and rugged construction.  Cut my search time dramatically. An absolute necessity.

Thanks, everyone... I'll look into the two that you all have mentioned. Again, if I could get one to detect within 1 1/2" or so, I would really be glad.. Coloma Gold

I have several of them and the Automax V4 is the worst, maybe 1/2" max. The Fisher would be the next, max about 3/4" on a good target. I have a modified Centech and get up to 1 1/2 to 1 3/4 easily. The Garrett Pro Pointer is the best by far and will easily go to 2" even through the ground and if you hold a coin on the shaft just past where it is detected it will go about 1/2" more. I only use the Garrett and would not consider any other one and the only issue is the loud volume but a piece of tape over it fixes it. Hope this helps....Warren

Yes, that's the one that I am leaning towards... Thanks for the info.. My main problem is that the XV3 doesn't do a real good job at identifying specifically where the target is (once the hold is dug). This could be due to fact that this is a new machine for me and not as good as the DFX at targeting the item (in my opinion). Part of the problem is that I am used to the 6-10 DD and not the 950 concentric coil (I have ordered a 6x10 dd for my new machine). However, once I get the hold dug, I need a pinpointer to seach the sidewalls.. The Garrett propointer should be the 'ticket' to help me. Coloma Gold

Coloma Gold,

I've been following this thread and have found it interesting.  I bought my first probe last summer while I was laid-up, and I've only used it a couple of times so far.  It is a Centech, unmodified, that I got from Harbor Freight tools for about $20, including shipping.  It did okay in the field when I did use it.  Sure made pinpointing a lot easier!  After reading the thread, I air tested it yesterday.  I was getting a range of from 1/2"  to 3/4" without any problem on pennies, both copper and zinc.  A quarter and nickel were a little further but not much.  For the price it works good for me!       Thanks for starting this one!  It has been a learning experience for me!               Detecting

You can put a copper ring on the Centech Probe and it will do much better.

I remember reading that somewhere here on the forum a while back.  May have to try that out later.  Another winter project I may, or may not, get done!             Detecting

I have seen the hacks for the Cen-Tech pinpointer, switch replacement and vibrating motor and I understand how they will improve the pinpointer. But how will a copper ring on the exterior of the probe help it work? Does it improve the depth or does it throw the pulse to the side?

Is there a description of this hack on the forum or is there a U-tube link?

Thank's,

E.
