Has anyone been using the Garrett GTP 1350...

I saw the post about the gentleman who was having problems with the unit he had.  But, here-in lies the question.

I have an opportunity to buy one, and I haven't used a Garrett since I was brought into the "dirt fishin" world with a Garrett Groundhog.  That said the cost is around $100.  Only thing I see wrong is the battery holders are missing and the caps to cover them are gone.

Is the unit reliable, good bad, middle of the road, reliable, etc..

I have already jumped back into this hobby head first and full force.  I bought a new DFX, Tesoro Vaquero, and found another great deal on a Tesoro Lobo Super Traq..  All of which are proving absolutely incredible ranges of operating differences, but really great in their ability to get depth and function extremely well.  But I must say the more I learn about that DFX, the more I am pleased with it's versatility.

Anyway with the price of a new Garrett 1350 on the market, I can't help but try this unit out at the price I can get it for..

Any info or suggestions will be greatly appreciated..

Garrett GTP 1350

Go Up Go Down

I went onto Kelly co. detectors, and downloaded the manual which I had never read because my father took it and lost it. :Smiley
I went into further investigation into my GTP 1350 and I've found out some of my conflicts.  The jumping rings and short blips are due to rusty objects.  I learned that the angle in which the object in the ground is, can affect its detection.  I bought a weather-resistant cover for the main-housing compartment, and also purchased a 4.5" search coil for coin shooting.  The Garrett GTP 1350 is originally sold for about $600.  I'd say that the cost for what you would pay is worth it.  It has digital tone, including Garrett's bell tone response. Full featured. Depth is above average, as well as Garrett's visual discrimination and electronic pinpointing. The rear battery compartment can pull off and hip mount, decreasing the weight on your arm.

The missing caps and the holders to house the batteries in, I'm not sure about those.  Unless you could find a way to buy them somehow.  Sorry about that part, but I would say the Garrett would be a good choice.  I'm just getting to know mine for the first time since I've had it for about four years now.  If you have anymore questions, just ask and I'll see if I can answer them.

According to my experience, the sizing feature does not work well in trashy areas.

That being said, the unit is a good mid range one.

Okay I bought and it only cost me $100....  I believe it will be worth the money.  I called and e-mailed Garrett's for replacements or a whole housing for the batteries and I am now waiting on te price or verdict as to whether they wll send them to me or have payfor them.  Doesn't matter anyway I am gonna figure a way to make it work.

I even tried stacking the batteries without the holders and caps.  Then I took a piece of aluminum foil across the exposed ends of the batteries, held them tightly and turned it on.   IT WORKED....

Nice!! Hopefully getting the caps and battery holders won't be much of a hassle.  Glad it worked out for you though.  I suppose you haven't got to use it that much then?

Nope....   It was hard enough to try the aluminum foil thing and then hit the power button to see what would happen...  I ain't exactly that coordinated, but at least it turned on and did  little for me..

Ah, I can of figured that you didn't have time.  Whenever you do get the time, just drop a post here and tell us what you think about its performance.  I think you'll like the GTP though, it hits good on copper and silver but the White's MXT hits a bit hotter on nickel than the GTP does.

Well, Garrett's Customer service department responded quickly and will be overnighting (overnight cost is on me) new covers and battery holders for free.  And to make sure this isn't a future problem I agreed to buy a backup battery case (whole) for $34.95... That way I will always have a 'hot set' ready to go.   I beleive that it will all be okay tomorrow morning when they arrive.

Of course I am not lacking in detectors, since I do have a new DFX, Tesoro Vaquero, Tesoro Lobo, and now the GTP1350.  But when I want to try different things, and have access to a unit that will work, I would say I am about ready.

As soon as I have time I am going out to see if it proves to be a good unit.  I am currently in Atlanta today and tomorrow and I will be hunting here and when I arrive back home...

Sounds like you don't have a shortage of detectors.  The DFX is one of the best machines for coinshooting too.  Garret can hit a bit hotter on copper and silver on it though.  Keep us posted and tell us of your experiences. Wink
