This is Richard Ray. I want to clear up a few mis-understandings. First I helped design the VIP along with several other brands of detectors. They were at first manufactured by Modern Assemblies in Garland Texas, the same people who made the Garrett electronics (at that time) and other brands of electronic boards for the detector industry. Then the line was sold to the son of a well known treasure hunter who produced his own detectors. Then I bought the parts and some equipment moving everything to Manvel where my family and I continued to build the PHANTOM and a few BUCANNER detectors but NEVER produced any of the cheaper "plastic body" detectors. Then after some financial problems, I sold the parts to some men from OK. I also supplied parts for some other "light weight" detectors and designed a new "modular" mini electronic board that could be "upgraded" to the buyer's needs.
Today after a time working within the Nuclear industry and overseas, I was hit by some serious health problems and am now wheelchair bound. My grandchildren have set up a Facebook, a My Space and You Tube accounts.
    Thank you, Richard Byrd Ray

Richard,

That's an interesting short history of an historical part of the industry associated with our hobby. Thank you for that.

It's all about that moment when metal that hasn't seen the light of day for generations frees itself from the soil and presents itself to me.

Richard, you are a living legend. It's really great to see that you are alive and sharing your experience with others. I am very sorry that you are some what physically impaired. That can certainly be frustrating.

I wish you a full recovery, and many happy Treasure Hunting years ahead.   Dell
