Just a Heads up for you all that tramps out in the Cactus and Pinny Woods.

Seems this year has been a Bumper Crop year for Mr No Shoulders, Buzz Tail, Coon Tail or AKA Rattle Snakes.

There has been no less then 14 Bites in Arizona just in the past two weeks.

People in California reporting them even in town.

Here in New Mexico there showing up places normally not a problem.

Thanks for the reminder BA.

Indeed, there are a bunch.  Went hiking last week and nearly stepped on a little coon tail on the trail.  No rattles yet so I imagine he would have dosed me heavy.  Have also seen many on the road dead.
Little boy got hit last week too.  He made it but it took a bunch of antivenom.  Close.

Best be wary and use one ear for a headphone and the other to listen for the buzz.

I'm glad my wife isn't reading any of this, or she'd cancel Saturday's trip.

I'm thinking all the Fires and the Drought is putting them on the move.

this might be a stupid question ( we dont have rattlers here) is a thick pair of trousers enought to stop you getting bitten?

Ahhhhhhhh But you Have Adders!

No thick pants will not stop it alone but does help.

When a Rattler strikes they strike fangs forward.

When they hit something they Clamp down to inject the goodies.

Loose fitting pants can cause that reaction before they hit you or your skin.

Best bet is high top boots of quality leather  , Snake Guards (Armor) .

Better Yet , just be aware of what's going on around you and where your doing it.

Don't do stupid stuff like step over large rock, logs and places you can not see.

Don't be turning over logs or rocks without thinking what could be under or behind it.

I used to live West of Tucson, Thought a nice water basin made of concrete would be great to attract birds.  It did but also regularly had a large diamondback in there too.   Well that was many years ago when I was still desert green.  Now any water for the birds has to come from the rain and I don't have as many slithering visitors.
Had a German Shepherd that would not leave them alone.  He got hit twice.

Once had a 2 1/2 foot long Gila monster get ahold of a dog too.  Dang what a mess that was.   You know, they are slow till something touches their tail!

Oh well, better keep an eye out and keep a good set of boots on.

Weird Stuff Here.

Been living here for 22 years now and have NEVER seen a Coon Tail on my 5 acres.

Yet the Black Top road East 2 10th of a mile away we see them all the time.

The people just South accross the Road that boarder the property have problems with them.

I think it may be all the Dogs and Chicken I have.

But yet again the Gopher Snakes drink out of the Quail water we have ever few days?Huh???

Weird Stuff Here.

It may be that your dogs are able to keep the rodents population low enough that the gopher snakes can compete and keep the rattlers out.  I know when I got cats, to take care of mouse invasion, the snake population was reduced somewhat.  Not sure it the "apparent reduced rodent population" had any thing to do with it or not.

Chickens love snake, really anything that doesn't eat them is fair game LOL.
