[hello] I'm new to this forum and I have a question for all of you who use a surfmaster P.I. dual field. I have that detctor plus the original surfmaster and I dont like the audio of the new dual field ,I like the detector I just can,t get use to the audio the original surfmaster I know when there is a good target and I know when there is junk under the coil but with the new one and 500 hours logged on it this summer I still cant tell a junk target so I have to dig everything, not that that is a bad thing this detector has made some impressive finds for me this summer  . I was wondering if anybody else has this problem . and does anybody have any feedback on gray ghost headphones and how they like them for the money .  thanks and happy hunting

I just read the manual and would suggest you turn your sensitivity down when you find your next target that you know to be a coin. Or bury a coin in the sand at 8 inches in depth and turn your sensitivity down until you get a signal that is still solid but not as bold. Then bury it deeper and more shallow to see if you can hear the difference. When you do that, you should start hearing a variety of tones.

Contrary to popularly held beliefs, turning down your sensitivity does not affect your depth. It affects the target response sensitivity which is an audio threshold signal. Experiment with it at home and see what I mean.

thanks I,ll give it a try tommorrow  and see if I have an easier time figuring out the good the bad and the ugly  it makes sense cause the original surfmaster P.I. that I like the audio on does run a lower preset gain ,thanks its worth a try , i'll keep you posted. this is one of the coins I found in august with the unit and if I had to guess i would say it was over a foot down so I do like the detector thats for sure

Bear in mind that I am going by previous experience with other detectors and from reading your manual. I have no hands on experience with your detector.

Have you tried asking White's about what is commonly called "tone discrimination?" That's where you set your machine to give different tones for different objects and depths. I recall that they have a forum there, too. Perhaps your question has already been answered there.

I was reading the White's forum and found some good advice from folks there.
