I've posted this here as probably one of the most used sites. Its not been rudeness that I have not responded to members thanking me joining, but went to another site straight after leaving this site and copped 32 virus's in about ten seconds flat.I don't usually get prone to anger but  I'd like to catch the lovely person as they would be talking a couple of tones higher if I did. So to reiterate the old story be carefull where you go and thanks to all the best wishes from members, mark

Fastgold, we're glad you're back.  Sorry to hear about the viruses you got from the other site.  Glad you got them out of your system, but you realize that after this we're going to be reading GD touting another statistic.

BA, I have an overwhelming dislike for those who write and broadcast a virus to a computer. I need a large abacus to count the number of friends who have come to me with their computer in a mess because some kid somewhere over in some tiny little room has created the next generation of computer time wasters known as a virus.

Fastgold, you have my full support in resurrecting the death penalty for those who broadcast a virus.

Now, here's a very, very useful link for anyone who may have a virus that seems to be unkillable. There are a number of sites on the link who offer free Linux boot disks which will absolutely slay any known virus. But here's the rub. You have to make a boot disk from them BEFORE you have the virus or download one or more of them from an uninfected computer. If you don't, you risk the disk itself becoming infected.

From that list, I like Bit Defender the best. It's quite big but I always keep a week old copy handy on a machine on my network which resides in the garage. That way if any of my other, more active, computers gets infected, I can slay the dragons.

It's all about that moment when metal that hasn't seen the light of day for generations frees itself from the soil and presents itself to me.

No arguement/disagreement from me concerning the virus-makers.  They are a definite pox and deserve to have their own drives infected beyond the point of salvage.

Sorry to hear about the virus, they r extrememly irritating.  It may sound like overkill, but i got a virus few months back and couldnt get rid of it, so I just did a system restore to a day or so before I knew when I got the virus, and Bye Bye virus.  I normally dont load up a lot of new software, so it worked for me real well..Good luck.

I also fully support the death penalty for virus writers. Some peoples whole lives can be ruined by them.

Thanks GD for the Linux link, thats a handy tool.

Sometime back I got one of those scareware viruses that pop up an official looking windows system screen saying you have trojans and keyloggers and such on your pc and if you pay us 39.95 our virus prog will fix it. It's just a popup scam but most antispyware and virus programs can't seem to kill it. The tool Combo Fix worked out great to take care of it and it's free.

In about 1999 I was working for a very large micro-processor company in the design group for a new flagship processor. We were adding a unique processor ID on the silicon that would be set at the factory kind of like a unique SSN for each PC. The public got wind of it through the hardware mags and created such a fuss about losing online privacy that it was pulled out. One of my friends at the time remarked how in a few years people will be demanding such a feature be added to stop the hackers and virus programmers from being able to anonymously steal all our data. Cheesy He was so right.

My computer has a built in restore system with pre-specified reload times.  Or you can just pick a date at random.  I am like you tho, I dont do much back up myself.
