I got an question for all you Midwest MDers.  What is the oldest coin that you have ever found? I have only found a 1856 Large Cent so far.  I am not sure if any others in the Midwest have really found any coins breaking the 1700 date line.

Just an thought that I have been thinking about lately.

Can we define mid-west? i.e. are you including Texas for instance?   I've got a feeling some of the md'ers in the heart of the old Republic might be able to beat that (I've seen a couple of graves in east Texas of folks who had fought in the American Revolution).

Well, in the Middle of the US I assume is what I am talking about.  Missouri, Arkansas, Kansas, Illinois, Iowa, Oklahoma.  Around those parts.  Maybe not so much Texas, but I suppose maybe the upper northeast of Texas could be included.

Hm....well, it may be a bit difficult to determine.  The county I live in, in Missouri was founded in 1835....so I guess I could find coins that would break the 1700 date line.

Seldom;
  Where is this Padre Island? I'm not familiar with this....

Seldom, that's why Texans can't play  Tongue    None of the rest of the "mid-west" states have Spanish treasure fleets wrecked off of their coasts  Smiley     Metal-Inspector, if you look at a decent scale map of the US, Padre Island is that long, thin barrier island off of the Texas mainland running from just south of Corpus Christi to Brownsville where the Rio Grande empties into the Gulf of Mexico.

Ah, I figured it was somewhere along Mexico or the like.

Well, I know that I could find some old French coins, as my county was founded by French.  It is unlikely, though.  My town, as I read in the history, was supposedly founded by a French in 1555.  There was supposed to be some boat wrecks or maybe ships as well in the river.

Other than that, the 1856 penny is my oldest coin so far.

Yeah, that find was actually lucky.  I didn't know diddly squat when I was detecting when I found it.  I had my father with me and dug a crater before I had it.  I was so excited.....never will forget the feeling, especially when I found some old silver dimes.

I found that 1856 out in the middle of nowhere field on my property.  The only reason I was influenced to search it was because when the field was plowed, chinaware would be all over the place.  Though, being farmed it could damage the things.
