I have a GMH that I found my only gold coin with.  It was a great detector in its day, but there are better ones out there now.  For me, Garrett seems to have lost its hobbyist focus.

As for the "customer service" notes above, I was less than thrilled with a recent experience trying to get my GMH repaired.  Maybe I was just unlucky, but it still doesn't make me feel any better towards the company going forward.

Hi,
My wife and myself have had Ace 250s for 4 years and we are exclusively beach hunters.

The Ace is a great coin hunter and with the stock coil gets 7 - 9 inches,
but the 9 x 12 coil will give you 12 inches
or 14 inches if ya dig iffy signals.
All these depths are in dry salt sand.
Pinpointing is spot on every time we PP of the front inner tip of the coil,
initially it does need a little practice.
On the wet salt sand at 2-3-4 bars sens will get ya 6 inches on coins.
Hope that helps ya somewhat.
Great Great Great Great

Great news for beginners who have been listening to the skeptics.   Smiley

BitburgAggie:
I have a couple Garrett detectors among my dozen or so. I've owned Garretts since the first BFO model. Also own Whites, Compass, D-Tex, Fisher, Phantom and a magnetometer. I've also had MetroTech, AHPro, Treasure Ray and several other old brands you probably never heard of. I've visited the factories of Garrett, Gold Mountain, Whites, Gardnier, Jetco, Relco, Phantom and a couple others. Most serious detectorist have several brands of metal detectors and use them depending upon the soil and hunt conditions. BUT it takes many, many hours with each detector, in order to get to where you UNDERSTAND the language of each machine. Unfortunatally, most people don't have that much patience.  LOL

Ain't it the sad truth (sad for them, but good for the manufacturers who can sell them fancier machines and for the detectorist who has taken the time and follows behind them  Wink )

Richard said it all there. So many people nowadays want instant gratification don't want to take the time to learn their machine.
In 71 I bought my first detector a Garrett sidewinder BFO good detector but looking for something better I got a Jetco Treasure Hark a month later a D-Tex and then I got a Compass from Ed Moody all good machines. The guy I hunted with at the time still out hunted me day in and day out with his  Garrett sidewinder  why because he had taken the time to learn it, while I was looking for a dream detector.
I think its like 30% detector and 70% operator

D-Tex to Garrett 2500

I just added a Garrett 2500 to my stable of detectors, but, when my wife  lost her wedding ring last year I pulled out my D-Tex Mini-Pro (that I bought new) . . . it took me longer to turn on and tune up than it did to find the ring.  Love those old BFOs!!

Dan,
One thing about a Garrett machine . . . .You can pick up the phone and call Charles Garrett and talk to the man himself.  972.492.6151 or

www.garrett.com
He is still "the man in charge"  and active in the hobby and research.  Mr. Garrett was one of the first to put a detector on the market in my area (DFW) the other was Bill Mahan both in Garland, Texas I found Bill before I found Charles that how I wound up with a D-Tex machine.  D-Tex didn't survive Garrett did.
