In days gone by, this kind of question could be answered by describing the best of possibly 6 brands. Today, there are dozens of detector manufacturers and hundreds, if not thousands of models, from which to choose. For a start, describe what you will primarily be looking for and where you will be seeking it. Shake in a generous amount of budgetary information, then sprinkle it with a dream or two.

Let us know what comes out. Perhaps then a genuine and relevant bit of advice will come your way.

To recap: Tell us what you are looking for, where you are going to be hunting and how much you have to spend.

Golddigger is right on target with his advice. The more we know about where your going to hunt, for example on the beach, in the water, in the woods looking for relics AND the $ you want to spend, the experts(I'm new so it's not me) the more they can help you. Oh yea, welcome from Carlisle, Pa!

Thank you for responding.

Where I would like to start searching and learning about treasure hunting is on one of the beaches in Long Island Sound, as well as in the water up to about knee-high, on the same beach.

Very few large rocks, mostly the smaller thumbtack size pebbles as well a rough sand.
Would like to look for jewelry(gold, silver, platinum), coins, and artifacts. Later in the year, will be taking the metal detector I purchase to a lake where we go camping in a state park, and look on that beach/shallow water as well.

I am unemployed, so the $ are very tight. Not sure how much a good quality starter detector is. Probably no bells and whistles I would think. Buying used is a great option as well. Any information anybody could send my way would be very beneficial for myself.

  Thank you in advance. Smiley

Hope the Easter weekend was great, I had unexpected places to be all weekend.

If you are on a tight budget, look into the Tesoro Compadre. They go for under $100 second hand with some as low as $50 and they are one sweet machine that will keep you finding treasure. I got mine based on the recommendation of a guy who absolutely loves Tesoro and he was right. It never lets me down.

Thank you very much. Besides Craigs list and local newspapers, where do you suggest looking for one?

One of the best places to look for a used MD is on Ebay and if you use Paypal you have the protection of getting your money back if it does not work as described. Do a bit of homework first as there are many MDs out there that will suit your needs. Check the new prices using Google then set your budget and stick to it. Watch how the bidding progresses and put your bid in with only seconds to go if it is still in your budget. Do NOT get bidding fever and over bid. If you miss on your first few attempts don't get down, you'll get one at your own price eventually. BE PATIENT. BE LUCKY.

There you go, augusta has been looking for awhile and his patient's paid off, and so will yours. Like he said don't get caught up in the bidding fever it will kill you. Also check return practices of seller and shipping. I have seen a 50 dollar MD carry a 35 dollar shipping charge.

Nearly every Pawn Shop I have been to in recent times has had a detector or two.
Beware though sometimes they are there simply because the shop owner did not know what he was looking at.
I say this because sometimes they are old/shot/and some just don't work.
But then again I have seen some really nice detectors there too.
I saw 2 nice Garretts in the same pawn shop and both were worth more than what he was asking.
Hint: If they are still in the box they were probably gotten as a Christmas/Birthday gift and never used or used once and disposed of at the pawn shop.

Whether you go the pawnshop route, the e-bay route, the craigslist route, the garage sale route, or any of the other routes, preparation it the key.   Spend some time thinking about how you intend to use the detector and which features are most important to you.   Then check out the independent online reviews for detectors that you see in places like e-bay.    With that knowledge, you can pretty much set a maximum price you are willing to pay for a specific make/model of detector and then adjust down from there.  Do those steps and you will be more likely to recognize a bargain when you see it....and you'll be prepared to jump on it.

And as the others have said, patience.
