Question 74- Metal Detecting on State Lands (# 700110): It is currently not legal to use metal detectors on state owned lands unless authorized for the purpose of retrieving personal property. The current rule was enacted over concerns about people using metal detectors to locate artifacts and possibly taking the artifacts or destroying the site so that it could not be recorded and preserved properly to reconstruct historical events. Under this suggested permitting system, participants would be required to have some type of educational instruction or certification before being issued a permit. Persons would not be allowed to disturb or retrieve historical artifacts and doing so would result in the loss of the permit to use a metal detector on state owned lands.

Do you support the DNR establishing a permit system whereby participants may purchase an annual metal detecting permit for the sum of $20 and be allowed to operate metal detectors on all state owned or managed property and properties purchased with Stewardship money?

Man that's an ugly proposal.......I can't make up my mind whether it is an improvement over the previous situation or not.....'cause you know they aren't likely to consider an "educational program or certification" not controlled by the archies and/or the greenies as valid and acceptable.   If they would accept one by an FMDAC accredited entity, I'd say it's better than not being able to hunt at all.

"educational program or certification"

I don't much like the looks of that. The permit is 20 bucks but how much for the certification program? And bet you have to renew the certification every 2 or 3 years.

On the good side, at least it's a step in our direction. Paying permit fees and going through red tape is a pain, but it's better than not being allowed to dig at all.

If we stood up for what's ours , there would be NO PROBLEMS!

Now if you find a Meteorite on Federal lands they want you to Turn it in . It belongs to WE the People and it goes to the Smithsonian to be locked away in some cardboard box in the basement for 40 years until someone decides it's time to have a look see.

LOL!

"educational program or certification"

I am afraid that we are going to see more and more of this over the coming years. And yes lots of the bull is governments wanting to control our activity's the archis  in their ivory towers wanting all the history for their self. But we have brought a lot of this on our self with folks leaving holes all over school yards and parks. The night hawks digging up archeological sites in the middle of the night.
I am not judging trust me I have done plenty of Night harking myself because I am not willing to share my years of research and recovery with the state. But one thing is for sure when the sun comes up you will never know I was there.
