Go Up Go Down

I had reported in another thread that my Sea Hunter was not working properly.  Several suggestions were given from checking the batteries and all the connections to coil problems.  I have received a letter from Garrett about the repair.  Not mentioned in the repair but they actually replaced the board and gave me an updated board as mine was '09.  The letter shows a balance owing, but the MD was still under warranty so everything was covered.  Let me know what you all think about the repair, and if there are any tech guys out there, let me know what actually went wrong.

Thanks

I didn't see any moisture in the view window at all.  Is that what the letter says to you?

They Replaced the Switch and the Board.

That leads me to believe it got wet inside.

I could be wrong but that's my bet. Cool

Controls replaced.    Pretty much a New Detector , Ea?    Shocked

yup a pretty much new detector..  They said nothing about it getting wet, but they did mention that it might have a loose board or connection or something.

Solder is made from lead and antimony or lead and tin, depending on the brand, in a 60/40 ratio. Both metals are easily corroded by salt and water. Even a bit of water vapor near the ocean could cause it if you opened the machine in the salt air. Garrett tins all of their boards making solder the most exposed metal inside of the case. Any few drops of moisture will begin surface corrosion instantly taking the shine from the solder that coats the legs of all components.

I'd say you had a leak in one of the weakest points of your system. They replaced the seals (O-rings) and the switch indicating to me that you had a leak. Since the main board was also replaced, it may have been a case of being cheaper to install a new board than to troubleshoot and find a single bad component and replace it. Or, to my way of thinking, the corrosion in tiny amounts all over the board may have been fatal.

No matter what, the detector is now functional and surprisingly, even if it was out of warranty, the repair cost was very reasonable. Just one ring recovered would have covered the cost if you actually had to pay for the repair. This looks like another good result from the Garrett team.
