Hi Guys,

I wrote an article for the May edition of the "Temerity" magazine on the question of what are the benefits of detecting in all-metal mode. You can read / download the PDf at this link:

First Thing I can think of is you Hear it all.

Modern Computer Driven Detectors work on a Threshold thing.

Any thing above a preset Return level will produce a certain Response.

All Else is Lost.

During the Processing of that signal there is always a overlap of Good and Bad.

Most Manufacturers error on the side of Different Target and the Signals between are Ignored or Lost.

In All Metal you hear the response as it comes in.

In the Communications World you have to have a person conveying the information and the person doing the Receiving of said information.

Like a Good Stereo System, what is the last point of Demodulation?

Hint:   It's Grey, Sorta Orb shaped and has lots of Ripples in it.

Correct!   The Brain!

If a machine decides what information to send you, you only hear that.

The Brain is a Crazy Weird machine that so far has not been able to be duplicated as for What Information it can Process or De cypher.

Example:   When I was 10 years old.

I went to the State Fair.

The ANG had a Microwave Ground Radar set up pointing over I-10.

All you could hear in the ear phones was this Rush of White Noise.

In less then 10 minutes I learned how to hear a Person Walking from a Motor Cycle from a Car from a Truck .

Yep, People now days want Instant Gratitude and Nothing Less.

I'll Never be without that few minutes of what I learned.

I can tell you if it's Lead, A Nail on end or side ways.

I can tell you if if a coin flat or on edge.

I can tell you if it could be a NUGGET because of the Soft Sound it makes.

 Cool

I switch settings/modes/discrimination levels/sensitivity  around on some targets to gain more info before I dig sometimes. It not only gives me more info on whether or not to dig, but gives me more knowledge of my detector and a better idea of what I'm about to dig for next time. I narrow the target in pinpoint mode to listen and watch the outline of the target. On most detectors, pressing or pullling the trigger "narrows" the target. You  get the shape and size of it that way.  Just some info for those that dont use it, or those that are new to detecting. I'm still busier than a one legged man at an ass kicking contest right now. But Ive been out with my T2 SE a few times lately. I have the 15" coil for it and looking forward to hitting the 1830's homestead behind my place when I get time. Here is a video I had saved on my youtube channel   <object width="853" height="480"><param name="movie" value="

Hi Guys,

Experience is the answer to this question, but it is quite amazing how certain materials can mask other stuff.... I agree that you can normally hear it in the tone on the machine, but like my Tesoro, the tone is the same for all finds. So if you discriminate out a material with that machine, masking will kill you. The worst part is if you discriminate out iron which has say a copper penny under it, the Tesoro will not pick up that copper. It is important to take time on a site and using all-metal mode, at lest pull out as much junk as possible then pick out the better stuff. I know in very trashy areas it can be very painful to dig all the rubbish out, but in the end to stand a better chance of getting all the good stuff also. It is also important that you adopt a good search pattern technique to make sure that you cover as much ground as possible  Great But each person should do masking tests with their machines so that they can learn how their machines behave... It is fun to do also  Wise Thanks for the input guys, I enjoy this topic a lot, it has also helped me o find more better items  Wink

I personally like the all-metal mode.  The whites V3i has a great feature of all metal mode audio in one ear and discrim in the other depending on the program you are using.  Your coin dig can turn into a relic find if you so desire.  I like not missing anything.  As a beginner, I feel that you must do all metal mode because you need to dig everything in order to get a feel for your MD.  An MD is like a violin, any fool can pluck the strings and make a sound, but to really make it sing you need to practice practice practice... digg digg digg

Good info peter. I always look at teh area Im working, do I want to spend a lot of time here? Also I can start notching once I get a signal and see if I have junk or not. There is always claims machines can pull out masked signals, but best to just clean it up if you like what your finding. Right now I have a old Bounty Hunter, and all metal mode is really the only way to run these coin shooters. If I take my time I can still find good targets after a area has been cherry picked.

The F75 just left Dallas, whoo hooo. Ill know soon enough if its true. I have a spot completely covered in small pieces of tin around a old homestead......among other places. Pretty sure its the walnut between your ears and not just the machine. Even the old BH I use can do a few tricks if you spend time with it.

Prospector is my main Mode.   I dig it all.

Out in the Boonies I don't get that many Pull Tabs .   Bullett Fragments are my Issue.

Bird Shot is Ugly some times.    Gold and number 8 shot can sound the same.  Tons of the stuff out there.

There all Over the place.   One would think there was a War out there some times.

It is important to know about the land that you are going to detect, that way you can know what to expect to find  Great this will also be a guide to the way in which you are going to search, and what discrimination to use.... If at all possible, all metal mode should be the way to search any site, then depending on what is being found, discrimination should be to the minimum.... On the Garrett Ace 250, I must admit, I like to take out the first 2 segments which are iron, this way mineralisation, and wire and small iron are ignored, but bigger iron still sounds out.... Most of the sites we search, especially Boer war sites are covered with rust, this makes detecting very difficult, 2 segments out on the display solves that problem. On my Tesoro, I mostly use all-metal, then when I get a signal, I switch across to discrimination to see if it is ferrous / non-ferrous.
But the bottom line is, that if you want the good finds, then the only way is all-metal mode. Another advantage to all-metal mode is the extra depth that you can get. Discrimination loses depth  Thumbs Down
