What coil size is the absolute best for ground penetration? I have always thought that a coil of about 7 to 10 inches was the best types for most general usage--particularly the 8 inch size for most items. When in excessively trashy ground, I'd rather be using a 6 or 5 inch coil-which still gives some decent depth and coverage for most coins---I've found coins dating to early1800's that were no deeper than a five inch coil could detect. A smaller biscuit coil is for extremely trashy ground where no other coil would be effective. These coils can ferret out some goodies in places where no other coil could even work for all the bits and pieces of trash.. Great Clapp Detecting. One thing to remember, is that the larger the coil is, the more that ground interference can mess with it and distort the coil's abilities to penetrate the soil-or at least that's what some tech folks say anyhow. So, actually a coil of 8" could outdo a 12'' coil in some situations and even penetrate deeper in some soil conditions.

Preferably, for me.  The 4.5" Crossfire coil for my Garrett GTP 1350, I would use anytime against the factory added coil, the 7x10" coil.  It can really separate the target readings.  The other day, I was using the 7x10 coil and I ran into area that was rather spotted with heavy amounts of trash.  It was just going nuts.  I use the 4.5" and it separates the targets with relatively ease against the 7x10".

Now, I mainly use the 4.5", unless I know that I am in a place where there is not much junk.  Then, I use the 7x10" coil.

That, and I think that every detector responds differently to the various coil sizes.  It would be hard to say for sure what size could penetrate the ground, but the smaller sizes would probably be your most ideal.

Coil size and ground penetration ..Larger the coil, deeper it will go...at the risk of not finding small stuff..The actual deciding factor is the frequency, usually the lower, the deeper. Small coils aren't as prone to  masking as are large coils, so they have a better chance of treasure vs trash seperation..I went from stock, 8 by 9, to a 5.75, found coins I had missed. Went back to a stock coil and found coins I had missed,,,,,but my search pattern was much tighter and sharper after using the small coil. Pays your money and hopes you find same.Cordially Nad Detecting

Every one seems to have hit it!

Coil size is not the only factor.

Freqency is too.

The higher the less, the lower the deeper.

It's all a trade off of what you wish to find.

It is a bit of each and the combinations you employ to find what YOU like.

In the 50s, I built detectors in the 100kHz range that seemed to work fine, for coins... some crystal controlled, with an 8 inch coil, average. I got about 4 inch ground penetration at 100 kHz.

The 2 box machines have huge coils, and much lower frequency and can easily penetrate 12 ft of ground.... but, do not pin point as well, basically, it is whatever you need to work for you.... everyone to his own tastes. Of course not everybody will be happy, 100% of the time, its a given.
