I usually pound them with a  hammer until they are reasonably straight then use them as spending money.

I hammer them down and spend them.  Also for those who beach hunt, those ugly pennies you pick up, the banks won't take them.  Sooooooooooooooo I just clean them up the best I can and spend them.  I took a big bag of cleaned coins to the bank this week to have sorted in their coin sorter and they refused to take eaten away pennies.  I told them no problem, I brought all the coins home, sorted out the bad coins and then took the good clad coins to the bank to have sorted.  I now have a bowl full of ugly coins, that I just put in my pocket when I need some change and spend them.  One way or the other, the government is going to get these cheap coins back!!!

By the way, I tumble all my clad coins before I return them to the bank.  I just use a tumbler that I bought at Menard's and some white fish tank stones, I bought at Wally World, (Wal-Mart), put stones and coins in tumbler container and a squirt of Dawn dish soap, some water and tumble away.  After removing I pour the coins and stones into a strainer, wash them off real good, then pour them into a handheld beach scoop in a bucket.  Shake the scoop and the stones fall through leaving your coins.  Pour the coins onto a towel and check for any funny looking coins or good dates.  Never know when you will find a off center coin or a off strike coin.  After drying, put them in a jar and take them to your nearest bank or some stores have sorters.  Then Spend the money for a New Metal Detector,LOL.
or batteries or other equipment you might need.

I've got a couple of Thumbler's tumblers. I just toss them in and get them half way decent and pass them on when they're too beat up.
I just don't know how I did it without a tumbler.I remember being refused the coins at stores. Now I just mix in the ones that don't clean and get some batts, gas or food.
I'm glad that you are on the same frequency as I am. I would hate to think that I am alone on this issue.

Yep, lawnmowers can really tear up coins...I usually do about the same. If coin isn't too bent, I just spend them as they are. For silver coins I just keep them as they are even if they are bent and scarred...these are good for scrap silver.

I was told by a bank teller that banks are required to replace damaged coins. I have never tried to trade any in never have that many. But if you get a lot might look into it.

I have a vise on my bench at work that has removable copper soft jaws. Usually just one good crank does the job.
