There is one trashy area that seems to be calling me back . But as it's called , I find nothing but pull tabs and twist off caps , hence the name ( trashy area ) Please give me some feed back on my crazy idea . I was thinking of grabbing a shovel and beating myself in the head with it Violent ! Just kidding , I was thinking of shaving off about 5 inches of dirt on sections to hopefully find older coins belo [mad]w all  the junk  ! What do you think ? Violent

actually, that's not such a crazy idea.........but you might want to put that 5 inches of dirt through a screen just to make sure you don't miss anything good in it.

Hi Cali,
Put it this way....
My son has been searching in our garden for ages.
Although the house is opposite a 12th century church and the remains of a 14th cenury Manor House our garden is FULL of iron trash.
What he will do though, is DIG EVERY signal!
So far he's found several roman coins, a medieval coin,a gold ring, quite a few "moderns",victorian coins (pennies and silver), victorian marbles and some real nice bottles!.......... and LOADS of trash.
So..... yeah ..... GO FOR IT!

I agree, it's better to dig everything and find junk than not dig and miss the big prize.
On the other hand if you are in a really trashy area and you don't have to worry about killing the grass, screening makes a lot of sense.  Yes, it is hard work, and yes it can get really dirty, but when you compare it to the constant up and down of digging every signal, it can be the faster and less laborous method......even if you only use it for the first few inches where most of the trash is.

I detect =REGULARLY= a dragstrip that has probably 60-70 years of trash, under the bleachers and everywhere, bout like a landfill, get a lot of stuff there, and after you detect in this type area, you get to know somewhat the different sounds some trash makes, not necessarily the ID or readout, I usually ignore that, cause trash is all shapes , sizes, and kinds of metals, takes a lot of digging, and stooping, just gotta learn the sounds, been doing this place for bout 4 yr now, 2 or 3 times a week, heck it's only 300 acre or such, a single tone detector will come on with sharp response,  soft response, crackle, all kinds of minute differences, shucks, just listen and you can pick the differences out Wise

You'll pick up on the sounds the more you do it, I been at this detecting stuff since 1975, and even watched my big brother in the early 50's, and I'm still learning some things bout every day I go out, just takes a little time and practice, good luck and HH Wise

i say dig it all. sooner or later you will hit PAY-DIRT.when i go out for a hunt, i usually dig enough
junk to fill a wheelbarrow. You never know when a good coin or gold may be directly under the junk.
me personally, i dig it all. if i get junk it goes in the bag and i re-swing. you never know what you miss
unless you dig it all.
