ahhh, now THAT is a much more easily answered question than is "What is the best detector", but even with that one you're going to get a whole lot of it depends (especially upon budget, whether you're talking land vs water or both, and whether you're talking general detecting, relic hunting, or nugget shooting).   All that have been said, the Garrett Ace 250 probably comes the closest to being the current title holder---especially as a general purpose machine that can fit into most people's budgets.

Like BA said the Ace 250 followed by the Fisher F4 then maybe the Tesoro Silver.
Who sells the most detectors would be Bounty Hunter in my opinion  but many of them are used once or twice and retire to storage. I just read that 1 out of every 8 households in the US has a metal detector in them. That's a whole lot of detectors bought for a week at the beach and never used again.
