Ah, you want the stuff dreams are made of.  We all like the idea of finding that gold coin.  It seems to know you are comming and it hides.  All you have to do is play a little trick on it.  The trick is a simple one, be smarter.

Gold is where you find it, if you know where to look.  When I go looking for coins with a metal detector there is a little planning that occurs.  I use an overlay method of selecting the site.  One of the overlays I use is the dates of American gold coin production plus 5 years as a guide.

Then I will scan the maps for location that were around in the date range of gold coins.  Keep in mind that mostly men carried those gold coins in their pockets.  Look for where they would socialize outside.  Play sports, drink, take the girls, swim, ect...

I had a chance to talk to some older fellows about gold coins in their day.  They would always tell the same story.  Gold was paid after the minting until it was all gone.  The coins would pass hands for a few years before they vanished from circulation, around 3 to 4 years.  Men usually carried them in their pockets as a peacock type of thing.  They would usually loose them before they were desperate enough to spend them.  The five dollar gold piece is quite small.

Gold was associated with large payrolls, mines, steel mills, ect.  So go craft a map of your town with areas marked that were popular during the gold issuing periods.  This is where you will have the better chances of finding that Holy Grail.

Good luck on your journey, and remember me when you find that Double Eagle.
