Don't know if this is a useful topic. I found by holding the detector in my right hand (I'm very right handed) was awkward when trying to dig with same hand as well find something to do with the detector. So experimented holding the detector in the left hand and everything became a lot easier. The detector was ready when seeing whether the target was still in the ground or in the pile of dirt/sand. Using the buttons on the control box is not a problem with the left hand. Pardon me if this is old news.

Hello Au,
I got so tangled up trying to do both with one hand is when I realised I had another hand. Hope things are going well with you.

Yeah I'm good mate, The one thing you have to watch for is leaning the detector up against ya self when you let go
of it to do something, thats the time it gets broken so no matter what take the time to put it down first, nothing
is ever that important that you cant put it down, except a snake other than that just watch out for you detector
because if that gets wrecked the day is ruined,

Yup Tom I'm also a very right handed person. I started out MDing right handed also.As time went on and after having to put my machine down every few minutes to make a dig,I found it a lot easier to swing with the left and tools in the right.I'm still that very right handed person that I was years earlier but after training myself to detect left handed it all comes as nature to me.This has worked out for me for some time now,my machine is not in the way ,I just lean it up on my left leg, kneel on the right and dig man dig.
In this world I'm a right handed person. In the world of metal detecting I'm a lefty..   :Smiley

I guess that makes me a switch-hitter.   I hate stopping except to dig targets, so when I'm out in the field for extended periods of time, I frequently switch from one hand to the other.   I admit to swinging right handed more than left, but probably a good 1/4 of my time is spent swinging with the left.  I dig with which ever one isn't holding the detector (unless I'm digging deep or in really hard soil).

I swing the detector with the side that's not tired!  LOL! When they both get tired it's time for a beer.

Can't dig with the left side due to a AC separation on that side.

Just set the detector down  when you dig if it's in your way.  No Big Deal.

I use my detector in my right hand and usually probe with my left.  If my right hand gets tired I switch the detector to my left hand. Being a little bit ambidextrous helps because I can probe and dig with either hand.  But, I usually set the detector down first and do what has to be done!  Detecting

By the way, tasherlock, all topics are useful if people respond and it makes us think about detecting and how we do it!  Wise

I too switch hands often when swinging. I dig mostly with the right hand and when I find a target, I set my machine down no matter which hand I swing with and dig my target.

Am comfortable swinging my detectors with either hand, with or without bungee cord on. Tasherlock, since your right hand is dominant, if you wish to train the left hand to swing, I can suggest using a bungee cord/hipstick and harness; it helps keep your swing level, and over time the left hand will become used to the action. Very handy to go left when the right hand is tired/hurt.
