I hope this is the right forum for this, if not please redirect me.

I am very interested in getting a Minelab 4000, I was also interested in getting the Whites XLT, would I need both or will one do the overall job?

I plan on nugget hunting, coin shooting, relic and historical sites, old mining camps and ghost towns.

Thanks

Hello Chuck,

I can unfortunately not give you a 100% accurate answer to your question as I do not own the Minelab 4000. Thus my reply is more based on theoretical thinking rather than field expirience.

However I believe that it would be best to buy both machines. The 4000 is probably the deepest seeking machine that money can buy you right now as well as what seems to be the best nugget finder on the market. It would be an excellent choice to do prospecting in the dessert and to hunt in areas whoch have allready been hunted all over in the past. I'm sure it would still get quite some goodies in these spots ... BUT it is a PI machine thus not offering a good discrimination circuit. So if you plan on hunting areas whoch may contain junk and or iron (which you may often also consider to be unwanted), then it could drive you just crazy after having dug your 10th nail from well above 15'' ...

The XLT is probably way better for coin hunting while the 4000 is the best choice for prospecting and relic hunting in remote areas.

If you don't want to spend a big bunch of money right now and do all of it then maybe you might want to buy the XLT first and upgrade to the 4000 later on. Maybe prices will have come down on it by then, too.

Just my two cents though  Smiley

Best wishes,

Christian

I agree. If you could afford it I would go with both.  I also have had no field exp. with the Minelab 4000 but from everything I've read it's probably the best gold detector available right now.  Certainly one of the deepest searching.  But like Christian said if you're planning on hunting some of those other areas you will probably want the ability to have a good disc. if you need it, in which case the xlt can give you.

Just my opinion though.  Let us know how it goes for you.

When I was hunting I used two machines - one strictly for gold and the other for coins, etc.

If you can afford it -get the 4000 for the gold and a coin machine. Not sure which coin machine from Minelab is the best though but I would buy both from Minelab.

I agree.
If, by choice, you use a 'Labbie, you'll find the gold and you'll get gabby.
... but if you'd rather use a White's, the coins and relics is your delight.
(ain't that corny? Grin)

P.S.
Happy Halloween, everyone!

Minelab-XT17000/Explorer
« Reply #7 on: December 15, 2006, 04:41:07 pm »
Go Up Go Down

Hey Chuck,

I have an Explorer XS and an old. XT17000. You are so lucky you are shopping now and not a few years ago. I have no gripes with my machines. They are killer. The only problem is the new technology.

The new Explorer SE(my son has one) has a better screen, is faster, quieter(too many sounds on mine) and the new digital ferrous/non-ferrous readings, along with the crosshair are foolproof.

I don't know what kind of a set-up you have for gold (personal or club claim or just prospecting) but for me, Minelab's high end machines are not the bang for my buck. If I were to upgrade it would be the Eureka Gold with three freq. instead of two. With my 17000 I have found small pieces of gold (shallow) that you could put in your eye and it wouldn't hurt you. I have also found nuggets up to, just over, one ounce with it at good depth. Do I need to dig deeper?....Not! Do I need to get on my knees for gold less than 3 GRAINS (not grams)?....NOT!

In case you are wondering; the max (edit; meant minimum) nugget my Explorer XS will read is 15grains, and that's way down in the low-left aluminum foil area, almost off the bottom of the screen. I use an overlay that I made with nuggets (15 grains to 525 grains) that I actually found with the Explorer. $1, $5 and $10 gold fit into the overlay pattern. When I get in an area where there's a ton of nuts, bolts, nails, birdshot, bullets and wire screen I shut down the 17000 and break out the Explorer.

Hope this helps. If you're working great ground the high dollar machine might pay. I'm not lucky enough to have that problem.
