Here's a very informative but highly technical thesis of how a metal detector works. When you read it, you will have more questions than answers because this is not for the novice. However, it is very accurate.

In it you will find 55 pages of a Master's Degree thesis that contains no end of formulas and theory. If you build detectors for a hobby, you will want to print this one. Don Lancaster is an acknowledged guru in electronics having written hundreds of articles for electronics magazines over the past 40 years or more. Much of his work is available free for download on his site at
